Business school at UMD...

Daughter went to UMD with an undeclared major (letters and sciences) and is now applying to the business school. She is in honors and has done well. Her counselor said that applicants with at least a 3.0 GPA at UMD are now automatically admitted..but this is the last year it will be done that way.
It has gotten so competitive that it will be done on a case by case basis in future. Not sure if this info is accurate (perhaps D. wasnt clear) but if it is..it means UMD's business school will be tougher to get into.

Thanks for the info.

By 3.0 GPA ..I mean the kids who are already students at UMD who have a 3.0 GPA, not incoming students.

i was never aware of this. i was a direct entrant into the business school, and as far as i know it goes like this:

http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/undergrad/admissionrequirements.html

in particular this part makes it seem as if NO one is auto-admitted, even if their GPA is a 3.0:

How will I know for sure that I will be admitted?

Unfortunately, under fully competitive admissions, admission is not assured. However, you can determine the probability that you would be admitted as follows:

* High Probability – High GPA (above 3.5), A’s and B’s in Gateway courses, with no repeats; evidence of outstanding leadership, special accomplishments, significant work or volunteer experience
* Moderate Probability – Good GPA (3.0 – 3.5), A’s and B’s in Gateway courses, no repeats
* Low Probability – Low GPA (below 3.0), missing course requirements, low grades/repeats in Gateway courses

according to the website, they recommend a 3.0 just to be considered. but, it may just be that the website is outdated - the counselor may be right.

D. applied a few weeks ago.
She said the counselor told her that her class was the last year where you are a direct admit with a 3.0 within the college.
After this year the rules you listed apply.
Anyway she has it with the new rules also..so she should get in. I hope so as I understand you can only apply once.

ah ok. i wish her good luck.

D. got in business school..she called to make sure they had her application (which I had mailed in) and they didnt..so fortunately she found out in time to fax it.
Since she is in the honors program and has great GPA..I did not think there would be a problem..but if they dont have the app..well then...

Now about that Honors Business program..I am not sure if she is going to apply or not. Since she is double majoring plus minoring in Japanese she is already super busy.

Maybe she should though..

Any updates about your (child's) experiences at Smith to share with those who have applied this year? Any word on when decisions will go out?
