what is it like?

I used to teach in the business school at Maryland. It is a tough program. In fact, it is considered to be one of the top two programs at Maryland and one of the better programs in the country. In many cases, you are NOT automatically admitted to the business school unless you have a certain freshman GPA. I think you can get admitted if you have very decent SATs and GPA upon admission, however.

Overall it’s a great program.

Well i was admitted to UMD for undecided and i was considering applying for business at the end of my soph year. would it be worth it? I am highly interested in both the accounting field and the system information management fields.

Amarch , it is a very good program and has a strong accounting program. However, if you are out of state, you would probably be better off going to your own in-state university due to the price. If you are from Maryland, it would be a fine choice.

taxguy, I have noticed your posts on alot of accounting forums here on cc. I’m a freshman accounting major here at Maryland…Just curious what do I have to do land a solid accounting job at a big firm or with the federal government out of school? Right now I’m sitting at a 3.4 because I decided it would be a good take calc1 for engineers(bad decision!) but I’m in the University Honors college and am in the school’s accounting association etc.

Jkterp123, if you keep your 3.4 and maybe try to do a bit better, you should be able to get interviews with the top firms. You could also interview with some of the larger mid size CPA firms here in Maryland too. Do a google search for the top 50 CPA firms in Maryland. My son works for one, Bond Bebee. I think they take interns each year and are still h iring.

I’ve been accepted to MD CP for fall 2010 as undecided major. I hear it is hard to transfer into the business school there if not originally admitted to it. Is this so? Anyone have a similar experience? What would they be looking for academically from me to accept me into business as transfer?

^ I’m in the same situation as you are… It is indeed tough to get into the Smith School as an transfer.

@ OP: I am also interested in the IS field. Do you anything about it @ Smith?

the only thing i know is that it is ranked highly at UMD, i think maybe 6th overall in the nation for IS. which is pretty darn good. I know UMD has strong criminal justice, business and engineering programs, almost all of which are top 25 even top 10

i would also have to do an internal transfer as well =/ what exactly will i need to be able to do so? i know its hard to do, but i know i would be able to handle it

It would be quite a stretch to compare UMD to a top 10 program. I’m sure it would be fine if you wanted to work in a regional accounting firm, though. If you’re in state, at least the price won’t be bad.
