I go to a SoCal CC and my college requires 3 Accounting courses to transfer to SLO instead of 2. I read on some of these forums that Slo only accepts around 7 percent of transfers for Biz and mostly picks the locals. I saw their website and it says that last year transfers had around a 3.5 but I see people with 4.0s getting rejected on the threads. Now I’m deciding whether to take that 3rd Accounting Course or take an Ethics course for CSULB accounting or a Finite Math course for SDSU accounting. I only have room for 1 maybe teo of these before I transfer 2018 Fall. Can someone tell me if it really is almost impossible to get into the biz program at Slo and if I am not local do I barely have a chance with a 3.75?
I’m an engineering transfer so can’t really speak for business, but I believe SLO generally does put a lot of weight on the required/desired courses listed on their site. That could explain the low average GPA if low-GPA students who took all the right classes got priority. I’m not sure locals get priority just for being local. Admissions has told me before that locals only have an edge in appeals, and only if they can show hardship if forced to go elsewhere. But what works in locals’ favor is their community colleges having all the needed classes articulated and their counselors helping students to focus on the SLO requirements. I don’t think SLO considers whether your college has the needed classes, so you’re still responsible for finding them elsewhere.
I got in with a GPA between 3.7-3.75 for accounting and I’m from the Bay Area. They do put more weight on the required/support classes just like CSULB. If you don’t have them done then you won’t meet the cutoff for competitive candidates. Usually, you only need Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting for accounting classes but I don’t know how the units at your CC will transfer over to SLO. If you are using assist to figure out which classes will transfer over, it’s a better idea to check with your counselor and read the descriptions of the accounting classes at your CC to find the course equivalencies for SLO.
Most of my GE requirements were completed when I applied so I think that played a large role as to why I got in, but that’s only my speculation. Hope this helps!
