Happy New Year to all of you in suspense about admission results at Harvard. As I mentioned in a post on the MIT Forum, I hang out on certain college forums here on CC mostly to gain perspective on colleges that might be of interest to young people I coach in our homeschool group's math team. One young man who I thought would apply to MIT this year decided to take an honors program scholarship at our state flagship university (my alma mater), so I guess this year's seniors whom I have coached are all done with looking for colleges. I don't think I'm personally acquainted with any Harvard applicants this year, and maybe I'll never be among the students I have coached (as many of the students on my math team like to stay in state, and one is quite focused on Caltech), but I do wish all of you well. Some of this year's applicants will be admitted, and rather more will be admitted to some other college but not to Harvard, but you've all got great futures ahead if you keep your high aspirations.

The OTHER reason I hang out on this particular forum so much is that it is one of the most literate and interesting forums on CC, as even several critics of Harvard who troll for flames here have acknowledged. It's a credit to Harvard that it attracts such thoughtful and well-spoken applicants. So here's wishing you all the best in 2007, and much fun in your learning endeavors until the college admission decisions are announced.
