I just got my revised efan and it doesn't have the Byrd Scholarship. I had it last year (but it didn't show up on my efan until September), and I didn't get anything in the mail or in my email to renew it. From what I understand UCLA should just verify that we are still enrolled and we don't have to do anything. Is that right?

The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship was axed due to budget cuts.

How come they still have it listed on the financial aid office website?

Nevermind, I looked up an article and I guess they did cut it from the federal budget. AWESOME! Tuition hikes and scholarship cuts…this year is looking just AWESOME.

Yeah you can blame the GOP and the UC Board of Regents and the California legislature for those things.

I emailed the California Department of Education last quarter and got this response:

Dear Robert C. Byrd Scholar:

The California Student Aid Commission (Commission) regrets to inform you that the U.S. Department of Education (USED) has indicated the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program (Byrd) has been eliminated for the 2011-12 school year due to budget cuts in federal funding. As a result, no new awards for the 2011-12 academic year will be made for this program. Additional, the program is slated for elimination in 2012.

The Commission is waiting for guidance from USED on how to proceed with students who are current recipients of the Byrd program. Once the Commission receives this information, you will be informed of the programs status.

If you have questions regarding this notification, please contact me at (916) 464-2590 or at specialized@csac.ca.gov; please include Byrd in the subject line.

Sincerely,

I just emailed them back and will post again here when I get a response as to whether or not they have more information as to what has happened to current recipients.

Ah, I just looked at [Funding Status – Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program](<a href=“http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iduesbyrd/funding.html]Funding ”>http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iduesbyrd/funding.html ) and read this: =(

The Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011 (P. L. 112-10), recently passed by Congress provides funding for the Department of Education for the remainder of Federal Fiscal Year 2011. That law specifically provides that no funds will be provided for the Byrd Honors Scholarship program this fiscal year. Therefore, the Department will not provide any funds to state agencies for scholarships this year. For information about other sources of federal student aid, please visit [FSA Portals](<a href=“http://studentaid.ed.gov %5DFSA”>http://studentaid.ed.gov ).

I got a reply, and it looks like senior luck out for the fall quarter, though I am not so lucky:

A letter will be sent to all Byrd participants soon. There is no funding for new participants entering the 2011-12 year. Regarding the current participants, what funds we have at the end of August 2011 will be used to pay seniors entering the Fall’ 11 2011-12 academic year. We will not be able to pay Winter or Spring '12 for these seniors. We currently have $300,000 and around 700 seniors ,and USDE has informed us they will not provide any additional funding. Therefore, we are encourage Byrd participants who are not seniors to contact their financial aid office to obtain information regarding other financial aid opportunities.

Wow…Thanks for the updates. Unfortunately we are not seniors :/
