I'm planning to visit Duke for Blue Devil Days and would like to know how much the cab fare from the airport to Duke/East Campus Market in order to know how much money to bring.

Also, I was reading about these other arranged transportations to Duke in their DukeTalent program. Has anyone tried them before and if so, are they dependable? Thanks!

Approximate Cost: $25 (student rate)

On Time Taxi and Shuttle Co.

Approximate Cost: $25

elizabeth2005 - I know other students have had good luck with On Time Taxi, but my D was charged more than the $25 advertised price as it took longer than expected to travel from the campus to the airport. She was charged $32 instead. On Time Taxi did refund the difference - but it took about three months and a complaint to the Better Business Bureau to get the $7 refunded. By that time it was the principal of the thing!

Most taxi companies charge $30 to and from the airport. Tip can be anywhere from $4 to $6.

Check to see if your hotel has a shuttle to and from the airport.

This thread has more airport discussion - the 4th post has information about taking public transit from RDU to Duke and the earlier posts have other airport info:

I would recommend looking into the local bus system which many college students in the area use. From my experience the bus option seemed convenient, safe, and really affordable (cost like 2 bucks). I had never taken public transport before, but the bus drivers were helpful and overall I had a good experience. Information can be found at TTA Bus & Shuttle :: Maps and Schedules :: . You would need to take the 747 from the airport to the rtp transit station and from there take one of the buses in the 400s?.

The students love Elmostafa and his staff at On Time Taxi..in case you missed it, he was an alibi for Reade Seligman in the Duke lacrosse case and for his trouble, he was singled out and maliciously prosecuted by Mike Nifong's underling at his orders for a bogus shoplifting charge, aquitted and this year was voted Readers Digest Hero of the Year. I read recently that he gave up his taxi status and concentrates on his shuttle business due to some conflicts re rules on taxis and shuttles on the books in Durham. Student business to RDU is big business certain weeks of the year.

elizabeth2005 - if you do take a taxi back to the airport build some leeway into your pickup time. All but one of the taxis my D has taken to the airport have been anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes late picking her up, including those that I have personally arranged and paid for in advance.

thank you so much for everyone's help! i think i'll reserve a cab in advance, either on time taxi or charlene's safe ride. it's my first time visiting duke/durham and i will also be going alone because my parents can't make it, so i'll feel safer taking the cab instead of public transport, but thanks for the info all the same.

westcoastmom, do you know what time i should be at the airport (whenever i travel, it's usually two hours before, but i'm not sure if that applies everywhere) and how much leeway time i should give? my flight leaves at 5:15 pm on southwest airlines. so i should tell them to come 3ish? also, will checking in and getting through security take a long time at rdu?
thank you! :)

Getting through security at RDU has never taken me more than 15 minutes even right before Thanksgiving. More often, it's about 5-10 minutes. I typically leave Duke 60-70 min prior to my plane's departure time as the ride is about 20 min. With a cab, though, they can be late, so obviously you have to adjust your times accordingly. Leaving more than 2 hrs ahead of time seems major overkill to me, though, unless you really like hanging out in airports. RDU is small and it doesn't take long to get to your gate.

elizabeth2005 - bluedog is right - however, due to the lateness of taxis and traffic delays our D always allows 2 hours before her flight time. One time her taxi was 20 minutes late and traffic was just awful - it took 40 minutes to get to the airport. She got to the airport just an hour before her flight left and then she had to be rerouted on another airline due to weather problems. By the time she was rerouted, checked her bags, got through security - her flight was already boarding!

The airport is small, but you can get something to eat there and stock up on magazines, gum and snacks for the flight.

one more question, where would be the best pick up place to tell the cab to come to? my hosting info tells me to go to the east campus marketplace when i arrive, should i tell the cab to also pick me up there when i leave for the airport?

i don't know how big the east campus marketplace is so i would like a specific place where the cab would be easy to find.

If I remember correctly a taxi cannot drop you off in front of the Marketplace. However, if the taxi takes Buchanan Blvd and turns west on East Union Drive you can get to the parking lot in back of the Marketplace:

Best thing to do - ask your host where the best place is for the taxi to drop you off and pick you up.

If they don't know the best place, then I would suggest the area at the bottom of Trinity Circle between the West Duke and East Duke buildings here:

This is also the bus stop for the bus from East Campus to West Campus.

East campus was the location of a racetrack for horses. Take a look at the map and you can see where the track was! The campus was once the location of the local fair, hence the racetrack.

It's a great university and I should know--I'm a graduate (Trinity '76).

Took Yellow Diamond RDU Taxi last week, my roomate recommended them. With a student ID it was $35. The cab driver told me it would have been $20 each if I had one other person to share the ride with me. Their website is YellowDiamondRDUTaxi.com and phone number is 919-729-5040. Last thanksgiving I used YellowCabCaryRDUTaxi.com and I think I paid about the same amount. Hope that helps!

Me and my friends use Yellow Durham RDU Taxi. You can share a taxi ride to the airport for up to 4 people $34.99 and $36 for up to six. The info is below. Ask for Matt, he is awesome.
