Cable in the Dorms

Hi Guys,

I'm currently living in Clark Kerr, and was under the impression that we get cable television. On the berkeley housing web site, it states that one of the several amenities included is 'free basic cable tv'. Ever since my roommate and I moved in, we have been unable to access television channels. We can somewhat view a few channels but they are very, very fuzzy. Others just dont come through what so ever. The thing is, everyone else on our floor has cable. They are able to view MTV, VH1, WB, etc...without any fuzz or static sound. Our lounges also have perfect cable television.

When we went to the main building and asked about our television situation, they told us that the berkeley residence halls do not include cable television. The front desk informed us that anyone who was viewing channels is probably subscribing to a cable service, and paying a seperate cable bill on their own. I know that this is not the case, as I have talked with the people on my floor/building and know that they got cable television from the moment they moved in.

So, my question is: Are we supposed to get basic cable in the dorms? If we are indeed just supposed to get three fuzzy channels, why would the website lead you to believe that you are getting 'free basic cable'? I don't believe that basic cable = three staticy channels. That is the kind of cable you get when you simply plug a television into the wall, anywhere on the planet. I don't know why UC Berkeley would advertise something like that.

Thanks for any help!

Don't listen to the Clark Kerr People, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to get it. The problem may be your TV or its settings, but you should be able to view it. Call . . . I don't know, housing services. There are so many little places, who knows where to start?

I thought I ajdusted my television to the correct settings but maybe I should look into that.

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to call housing services and basically just ask around a little bit. I am almost positive we are supposed to get regular cable.

I'm sick of going to the lounge for my guilty pleasure viewings of laguna beach..haha

Thanks Again!

ok, i live in clark kerr and currently get cable television. all we had to was plug in the cable in the white coaxial thing and then it worked. we're not paying some special bill or anything like that. btw, what building are you (i'm 7)?

i'm in 12. i plugged my television in when i got here, and configured the settings. this is also a new tv, so i dont know what the deal is...hrmm..

I get cable in unit 2 for free. Well, not for free, but you know what I mean.

oh wow 12, i have a bunch of friends in there - i get so lost with your "secret garden" and all. other than that i don't know how to help with the cable.

yeah. i actually loved clark kerr when i first get here. but now our tiolets are all backed up, we have random blackouts, my internet goes on and off throughout the day, and to top it off, no tv. WOO HOO.

My floormates (I'm also in building 12 [floor 1-1/2! :D]) get cable tv just fine, and I'm sure they're not charged. Your best bet is to check out the ResComp site (<a href="http://rescomp.berkeley.edu/resources/cable/)%5B/url%5D">http://rescomp.berkeley.edu/resources/cable/)</a>. Try to see if any of the RCC's can help. :)

Uhh. I lived in CKC last year. No problems with the TV..... Building 4 btw...

If we are not bringing a TV, where can we watch cable TV in Unit 1? I need my fix of reality shows :D

The main lounges of the Units all have TVs in them.

Just make sure you’re not trying to watch anything else if, say, the season premier of House is on. That tends to go down…badly, to say the least (evisceration threats, anyone? Very glad I was on her side in that argument…).

How many TVs are there in the lounge? And by lounge, do you mean the big lounge in each hall that is on the ground floor?
