Cafeteria Food

Hi guys! I'm in the process of planning out whether I'll live on campus or at home come Fall '15. I attended a worldview conference held at a college campus, and while the dorms were really nice, the food SUCKED. So, I was wondering - does the food suck in general, or is it widely varied from school to school? I plan on attending the University of Texas at Arlington, which is HUGE, if that makes any difference. Thanks!

I will be attending Western Carolina University starting this month, a school of about 10,000. My experiences with the dining hall there have been good. It is a buffet style cafeteria with different stations all around the edges providing different types of food, and the individual stations have a different menu daily. The food isn’t anything incredible, but the variety is very welcome and it is nice that there is a mix of comfort food and healthy food. I have had decent salads and really good spinach wraps, as well as some pretty good international food and delicious cookies. The breakfast is not bad, either. I have eaten in the Appalachian State dining hall as well, and it was set up a little differently than the stations of the WCU buffet style cafeteria. It was more like going to separate “restaurants”, but ultimately it was the same idea. The food there was similar in quality to WCU I think, although I’ve only eaten there the one time and so only tried the meal I got, which was a reuben, fries and a drink. I enjoyed it, but don’t know if that was one of their better options or not. Either way, my experiences at those dining halls were positive, but those were the only schools I was deciding between than I actually dined at!

My thoughts on this are that every school is differemt and even each dining area in the school (my school has 4 different buffet styles and a strip mall of restaurants) is different. Some are going to be better than others. My sister loves her school’s food from what I’ve heard, and I think mine is decent in most eateries at my school. Not the best, but not horrible either. Hope this helps!

You get sick of it the longer school goes on. I say this going to a school, BU, that has “good food.”

I share lang’s thoughts. As much as I adore UT’s buffets, I enjoy eating out with friends just as much.

I always think of dining on campus as being a bit like any other eating situation. Sometimes my mother would make meals I thought were awful and sometimes they were great. Sometimes fast food sounds great and sometimes not so good. To my way of thinking school eating options carry a lot of that same idea - Sometimes they are great…sometimes not. Sometimes it sounds fine and other times you are tired of it. Maybe you can get a meal plan that isn’t for every meal of every day and get the chance to go out sometimes?

It definitely varies from school to school too. University of Richmond has an AMAZING dining hall.

Florida Tech’s dining hall is pure gold. drools

It really depends on the school. I’m transferring to UIUC, and I’ve toured the campus and checked out some of the dining halls. They have various ethnic dining halls with a range of themes. Want some Asian food? They’ve got the Asia house. Want authentic American cheeseburgers and french fries? They’ve got that too. They’ve got other houses that have Italian Day, or French Day and things like that. There are a ton of different options…and meal plans are good at all of the different houses. They’ve got the standard run of the mill cafeterias too.

I’m currently at a community college, and I must say, the cafeteria food leaves a bit to be desired. It’s not bad for cheap cafeteria food, but it’s nothing to write home about.
