My decision for the award just came out....

Thank you for your interest in The Achievement Award Program.

This year we had over 2,500 applicants apply for our program, and it has been an extremely competitive selections process. Unfortunately, at this time your application is no longer under consideration.

We wish you the best of luck in your academic endeavors.

Best Regards,
The Achievement Award Program staff

Aw, I didn’t even know about this :(, I would have applied. I thought they automatically applied you to certain school scholarships. based on those things you filled out on the application… this Achievement Award had to be filled out separately?

Same response. I wasn’t exactly surprised; my application sucked too. I had already written about financial problems keeping me from attending Berkeley after high school, blah blah, so when I had to write about an obstacle I’d overcome, since I had already written about money, and felt that that obstacle was very common, I wrote about being narcoleptic. Which I am, but come on.

I had an interview two years ago for the Alumni Award Scholarship (didn’t get it; if I had, I might be at Berkeley now) and the only questions I really recall had to do with leadership, like “Tell us about three situations when you had to use your leadership skills to solve a problem.” That took me a little by surprise, since I expected questions like this, but did not expect to have to give multiple examples. If I remember correctly, my last one was pretty lame.

I was reading over again the qualifications for the Achievement Award Scholarship, though, and it does mention extreme financial need. I have financial need but, by their standards, it’s probably not extreme. I’m going to pretend that that’s the reason I didn’t get an interview. :)
