Hello, I am a CC Student right now. I am Transfering over to a UC in winter 2020 (January). I qualify for Cal Grant B at the moment since I go to a CC. Since I will be going to a UC I will then receive cal grant A. I will depend on Cal grant A for housing and food since I cannot live at home due to problems with my family. Do I need to do anything in order to have my Cal Grant Transferred over to the UC? I already have the UC im transferring to on my FAFSA report. Other than that do I need to do anything else? I tried going online and requesting a school change but It is not letting me for some reason? I am worried that I won’t be awarded my Cal Grant in time and I need it for housing and I really don’t want to take out loans since I already qualify for the Blue and Gold opportunity. Will the Cal Grant be sent over automatically or is there any forms I need to fill out?
Contact the CalGrant office. It’s not hard and they are very helpful.

I do need to caution you about expecting the CalGrant within a deadline date. Your financial aid office, at your UC, has to work with the FAFSA application and the
California Student Aid Commission; verification takes time and paperwork on your part and on the staff at the FA office. If you are staying on campus, the housing office will work with the FA office if there are delays in funding.
If you plan to live off-campus, there may be issues with expecting your funding on a set date. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn’t.
I thought that Cal Grant A can only be used for tuition?
Haven’t you received a FA pkg yet?
Your tuition will be about $15k per year. HOW is that being covered? And please don’t say B&G because that’s not a scholarship; that’s a promise. And that includes your Cal Grant A.
@mom2collegekids
I will be getting the blue and gold opportunity thing … so that means I will not have to pay tuition. And the cal grant Can be used for anything such as housing, books, supplies, transportation etc. It’s not only for tuition I contacted the cal grant office and my UC financial aid and they sorted everything out. Housing at my college is only 7 k a year so I will have money left over. And the blue and gold does not include the cal grant it’s a separate program on its own
Room and board at a California Uc is only $7000 per year? Are you sure that isn’t per semester?
Which UC?
@ucbalumnus is there any UC where a student can pay for housing but a meal plan isn’t required?
It appears that your college is UCR. Housing is a lot more than $7k per year.

I don’t think you’re correct. Ive seen many FA awards and B&G includes Cal Grants.
As you can see, B&G combines the awards you receive.
@mom2collegekids I’m choosing 650 apartment room a month so that would equal around 7k yearly tuition and when I spoke to financial aid they told me cal grant was separate. My EFC was 0 therefore I am able to use the cal grant as housing and other necessities. Maybe other B&G hace cal grants included. However due to my low efc. My B&G simply covers tuition itself. And cal grant is separated. Thank you for your help and your insight !
You know…I would check and double check your financial aid, and what it will and won’t cover. Sometimes the person on the phone misunderstands.
Look at the first response you got from Aunt Bea…and call the Calgrant folks directly.
Does your $7000 a year for housing include utilities, insurance, food, Internet, etc? Those costs add up too.
If this is off campus housing, you need to find out when you will be getting a refund from your college for aid that is over their billable costs. It might not be before you need to pay your first months rent…so have some money in the bank to do that.
You will also need money for books and personal expenses.
Just make sure the first person you talked to knows what they are talking about.
@thumper1 yea I already called all the financial aid offices! And I already got my award notification. And yes my apartment comes with utilities included etc. And my refund will happen around the first day of class etc and I also have a job so anything not covered by my financial aid at any given time can be covered by me. I’ve been basically on my own since I was 16 so I understand the logistics of bills money etc. My original question was just if my cal grant would transfer on its own or if I had to submit documents. I already figured it out and everything else in between has been taken care of. But thank you !
