So was I the only idiot who missed the whole thing, spent too much money at the student store, and went home?? : )

I would like to hear from those who went to both the SoCal reception(s) and the one held at Berkeley today. Was today’s any different than the SoCal one?

haha this thread confused me. I think you’re talking about the reception not the orientation. :)

ooooppppps

Well yes, something rather official at any rate. ; )

Maybe I’m wrong and a frequent Berkeley flyer can correct me, it seemed somewhat busy there today though, some sort of a graduation as well as some sport stuff, yea?

I went to the orientation…

I wish us College Confidential ppl got together and met each other. I’m curious what all of you look like and act like :P

Anyways… the administrators were all pretty cool I thought. They were very down to earth and genuine. They didn’t say anything groundbreaking. They were mostly kidding around and attempting to show that Berkeley was the place to be.

The student speakers weren’t very relevant to me. Berkeley was trying WAY too hard to look like they were super diverse. The two speakers that they identified as representative of the average transfer student were a latino Mom of four and an African American girl, both of who were majoring in Social Welfare… nothing more to say about that. I would have been more impressed by a 27-year-old Iraq vet or meeting this 60-year-old transfer student that they mentioned.

Overall, everyone was happy. The campus was also especially cheerful because everyone was graduating. I was able to talk to a few current students who all were happy that they chose Cal. Good day overall :)

I could not relate to the student speakers at all… I looked around and most of us pretty much looked the same age. I dont know why they couldnt future someone who could give a more relevant perspective to, oh i dont know, about 95% of the transfer population.

@cali trumpet Oddly enough the guy who called me to answer whatever question I had about berkeley was a 25 year old iraq vet haha
Oh and btw, I was between berkeley or davis too, but go berkeley :)

@Cali Trumpet

bleh. Someone people I met at the Costa Mesa reception were saying they were going to head up to Cal for today’s reception- looks like it was exactly the same program except for the scenery change.

@SF I know right? I bet that single Mom of four kids could relate to something like <1% of the students in the room. These twenty year old students are asking: “What’s the hardest thing about the transfer process” and and she answers “Well I need to balance my four kids and schoolwork.” And no offense to the other girl, but she was horrible at answering questions. Some dude asked: “Is there a place or event where we can find all the clubs” and she answered: “Yeah dawg, we have a lot of clubs, and its cool to get involved!” If UC was race/gender/life story blind, we would have instead had two intelligent and outstanding students to hear from and relate to.

@Solid Yeah, I really like Cal. The prestige + intellectual environment sounds awesome to me. However, I talked to a current Econ student today (freshman) who scared me by saying that she literally failed Stats21, which is the course I need to take AND get nothing less than a “B” in. Oh, and she got 5s on the Calc AB/BC tests, so she is good at math. I’m definitely leaning towards Cal (even bought my Cal sweatshirt today!) but I am still worried!

Trumpet, if Cal is where you want to be, and you go somewhere else because you think it’s going to be too difficult, you WILL regret it for the rest of your life.

Take the plunge dude.

yeah cali, i’ve also heard about how hard those are…when i was told by the department that i could still take those to meet the requirement i didn’t bother to ask if 133 can also meet the requirement…but going through courserank and seeing a pretty huge difference in the curve as well as reading all the negative comments on ratemyprof for the stat 20’s, i think i’m leaning towards the upperdiv lol, even though it is a class on computer databases

@cali the second girl reminded me of someone who would be featured in flavor of love or something. I literally got NOTHING of use from those two student speakers. I am not a mother of 4. I am not a sistah from the hood. Therefore, I could not relate.

I was very hyped by the presentation (I mean, I made it into a top10 major!) and loved the admission staff speakers. Yeah the students were a bit iffy but overall my trip to Cal (AGAIN) was awesome. :)

Ughhh, I really wish I just went yesterday because I think that would have basically sealed the deal for me.

It was pretty tough to relate to the student speakers. Odd choices.

I think they chose the student speakers the way they did so they can show that ANYONE can make it into cal and succeed if you try hard enough.
