This thread can be used for any dorm questions and answers, but here are mine.
What dorms have people heard are the best? I applied early decision and basically can choose any one. Im majoring in econ so ill be at orfalea if that helps at all.
Thanks

Sierra Madre. Search this forum. There are some good threads on the subject.

I agree. My son is in Sierra Madre and loves it. His friends in the Red Bricks and Mountain Halls are in triples. He has no regrets chosing Sierra Madre …

How are the cerro vista apartments or the transitions program? I thought it might be nice having my own room as a freshman. Whatever happens, ED is definitely a plus when it comes to housing choices.

I don’t think freshmen can really get in cerro vista,
only if you have special circumstances is when you can get it.
Yea, ED has better chances for rooms over the RD freshmen,
but think about all the current students, like upperclassmen, they have priority.
AH I really don’t want a triple.
I think college of math and science is in muir…

Which dorms are closest to the science and math buildings

Shoot for shasta dorms… They are close to everything , outside entry, and they are decent set up

Freshmen can get into the apartments, I know quite a few people who were able to. Most upperclassmen are in poly canyon or off campus.

Whoops my bad then.

My son is a freshman in Cerro Vista with 3 other guys. It’s working out fairly well for him - the kitchen has been nice to have. The worst part for him is climbing the hill every day, but even that’s not terrible. Freshmen have to purchase the meal plans which are more than he would otherwise need, so he struggles to use all 8 meals/week and all of the plus dollars.

He really doesn’t use the meal plan that much?
I was worried when I looked at it because 8 or 10 or 12 meals/week doesn’t sound like that much…

Well the Cerro Vista apartments have kitchens so I think shes saying her son likes it, but ive heard from others that people often dont use all of their meal plan

On campus food is the biggest misconception at all colleges…you think it’s going to be great and then you get over it…

Just wondering, does anyone know how it’s like in the Sequoia dorm? Since I’m probably going to there since I’m attending the Architecture college. Thanks in advance. :)

all the red bricks (including sequoia) are pretty much the same. rooms are smaller and square-like whereas rooms in sierra madre/yosemite are long and narrow. i think you’re also closer to your neighbors in the red brick dorms. these dorms are closer to central campus so you don’t have to walk so far to class.

i was in sierra madre my freshman year and unfortunately hated it. off-campus was way better. But that was just my experience, a lot of my friends loved the dorms. it really depends on who you meet.

Sequoia is money.

To clarify, my son has 8 meals/week and struggles to use all of them. He’s not that crazy about the food, and would rather cook up something in his dorm than go to a cafeteria.

Anyone that has mentioned Cerro Vista- what were the major pro’s and con’s for it?
Thanks.

My son is a freshman and lives in Cerro Vista. He loves it. Rather than share a room with one or two people, coming and going, with no kitchen and large community bathroom, he has his own private room which locks, shares a bathroom with one other person, and has a full kitchen, storage areas, and a living room ( his roommate brought a bigscreen TV ). It was convenient when he wanted a friend to visit and stay with him. And someone comes once a week and cleans the common areas and bathrooms. It is basically like living in an apartment, but on campus ( and subject to campus rules ). He’s already pretty tired of the on campus food, so he goes to Albertsons and stocks up on the basics. He likes it enough that he will probably live in Poly Canyon next year. But some people like dorm living better, so it really boils down to what you like. I know some people that chose the dorms and ended up in a triple were sorry they didn’t pick CV.

^ ditto for my son. Plus he says the campus food is very expensive. He takes the bus to Albertson’s and stocks up there, and his roommates occasionally do a Costco run. He’ll probably live in Poly Canyon next year as well if he can.
