Cal Poly Fall 2013 Admission Decisions

Fair enough, I do realize nothing is absolute. Cal Poly really has come a long way since I graduated, which I think is a totally awesome thing. It is alway impressive to know that CP can compete for Ivy level students.

And I do hope Cal Poly beats Yale in the upcoming game, and send them home to New Haven with severely bruised egos.

Accepted in january but didnt notice till today.

Major: Bio
GPA: 3.33 UW
ACT: 29 (30 combined)
Courses: all IB
State: Texas but attend a school in ontario
Scholarship: $2,000 a year

Dont plan on going because my sister went there for a year and hated it so much she transferred out.
To be honest im not sure why cal residents want to go to cal poly so badly. It is not a well known school at all, and really does not compete with any other good schools in rankings.

@ATexas

Cal Poly is a highly ranked engineering school. This is a fact.

Sent from my SGH-T999 using CC

@Atexas

And yet after knowing all the rankings and your sister’s experience, you had to apply to Cal Poly? And you only found out today you got accepted? After 2+ months?

You are right, CP is a bad match for you.

@ATexas I’m curious why did your sister hate it? What was her major?

My husband and I both graduated from Poly in 1994–he was Civil Engineering and I was Liberal Studies. We both loved our experience there. But even then it took 5 years to complete his CE major. LS took 4 years for my BA and 2 quarters of Student Teaching for my credential. This year, our ds#2 applied for Biomedical Engineering. Still waiting, like so many others… BUT, even if he does get in, we will have to think long and hard about it. While Poly is a wonderful school, you have to take into account that your student will most likely be there for at least 5 years and cost will increase every year thanks to our government. If our son is guaranteed to graduate in 4 years at another school (and he will be going on to grad school), it will be hard to commit to Poly for 5 undergrad years. Tough choice… Best of luck to all. For those of you who choose Poly, you will have a wonderful time! Just be prepared to spend 5 years there.

Emotions are running high on this thread and I understand how stressful a time this is to parents and students who are unsure where they stand with admissions. I’d like to respectfully ask that posters refrain from wild speculations about Cal Poly Admissions.

Here are some facts to begin with. The CSUs have as their mission to educate the top third of all high school graduates in California. Cal Poly is extremely impacted in most if not all majors and therefore uses higher selection criteria than any other campus. The uncertainties of the state budget meant that in 2012 fewer students were admitted, and that may be the case for 2013. The number of applicants has soared and broken records every year for the past 3 years. Cal Poly increased its out of state admissions recruiting in 2009 and 2010, while dropping the number of total selected/enrolled in 2010 and increasing the number of total selected/enrolled in 2011. An additional 100 full pay out of state students brings in an additional $900,000 per year to the college.

I understand that our state schools can benefit from additional revenue with out of state students. However, as California tax payers, we are already supporting the state colleges through taxes. Therefore, out of state kids with lower stats than in state kids should not be admitted. I have seen stats posted from oos accepted engineering students that are lower than instate kids that are still “undetermined”. Admit the well qualified, if not overqualified, kids whose parents have been prepaying for the state school for 18 plus years and then see if you have room for equally qualified oos kids. Really, kids with a CP GPA of 4.4 (4.6 UC GPA) from a competitive high school should not be a questionable candidate. Btw: leadership, work experience, 100’s of volunteer hours, 1300 sat (cr plus math).

Thanks for posting those facts, vballmom. It is clear that admission to Cal Poly keeps getting more and more competitive, especially for in-state students, which is a shame since the school is supported by the taxpayers of California. Last year it was astounding to see the caliber of students being waitlisted, especially in certain highly competitive majors like Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Here is a thread of waitlisted students from last March (2012). http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1294407-w-i-t-l-i-s-t-e-d-rd.html</a>
Good luck to everyone still waiting and if you are not admitted, know you are in the company of MANY very smart and highly qualified applicants for which Cal Poly just didn’t have the resources to accommodate!

Wow, from the link ralph4 sent, some of the kids waitlisted last year have staggering stats. I am quickly losing hope for my son’s biomedical decision after seeing those stats.

@NorthCAMom : Could it be that Cal Poly figured the kids with the very high stats will choose some other top school and therefore put them on waitlist and offer admission to kids with lower stats who would accept. You would think it should be the other way around :)

Maybe Cal Poly admissions needs to be audited by the state since they accept public funding. No part of the application is subjective so those who are most qualified based on what Cal Poly asks for, should be admitted.

collegeboundkid2: There was a thread last year about that very question.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1299252-overqualified-slo.html</a></p>

Sorry, NorthCAMom, I didn’t mean to discourage you about your son’s chances. I just thought those who don’t get admitted would want to know they are in very good company. They will have other very good options for college. Biomedical Engineering is extremely competitive as not every school offers that major and it is a field that is VERY popular these days.

My DD acceptance came last week in the form of and E-mail with a link to an acceptance video….I am assuming that acceptances will be trickling down through March….

Accepted
Major: Biology
GPA: 3.95 (UW) 4.25 (W)
SAT: 1900
ACT: 29

I know some of you may get annoyed by me posting this question here, but is there an up to date thread specifically for waitlisted people? I can’t seem to find one. I just want to find out if anyone waitlisted has had any luck in receiving an acceptance.

@JustinBryce: Congratulations!! Did you find out today?

Thanks!
I found out about 2 weeks ago. I just saw this thread now though.

Since I am new to college confidential and haven’t figured out how to send a private message, I’d like to publicly apologize for posting my theory.

Vballmom, I noticed the GPA SAT stats you posted are for “accepted” applicants. Do you have similar stats for stats for “committed” students (i.e. students who chose to enroll)? Or similar stats for instate v. OOS? Does CAL Poly publish “banded” stats? For example how many students with GPAs> 4.5 accepted in state v OOS, % enrolled in state v. OOS. Results tabulated in bands 4.5 >4.2, 4.2 > 4.0, and so on? I do know that Cal Poly uses a score which combines GPA and Test and EC/WCs. Do you the weighting formula for that score. Banded results are more meaningful than simple averages for 50K applicants.

I think it’s important for future year’s applicants to understand that there is much more to State School admissions. CA state schools play games with applicants and enrolled students. It’s the trade off for a high quality education at a low price.

With that said, Cal Poly was/is Ds favorite. She’s a smart girl and made smart plan. She has other good choices (with merit $$ to make cost = to CP). Still hoping for CP.

“CA state schools play games with applicants and enrolled students. It’s the trade off for a high quality education at a low price.”

Except that CSUs don’t provide a high quality education, Cal Poly is the only CSU that has any significant reputation outside of Cali.
