So I was recently accepted to Cal Poly SLO. I’m from a suburb outside of Philadelphia but have always loved California. I love what the university has to offer academically, however, I worry that I would get bored in such a small town. I know that there is the beach (which I love!) as well as many outdoor activities but what about the party scene?? I also am into Penn State, Udel, and Usouthcarolina. I like to work hard & play hard. How many nights a week do people go out? Is it easy to find parties? Any info/thoughts are greatly appreciated thanks!!

i heard that the parties there were hella crackin, especially cuz its in the middle of nowhere…

i also heard SLO parties>UCSB parties, which makes SLO hella tightttt

Plenty of parties, a lot of people go out Thursday through Saturday nights.

Girls can get in to literally any party they want to, and guys have a harder time. They usually have to be in a fraternity or know a lot of people hosting. Even still, some parties charge guys to cover the cost of alcohol [which all the girls get for free O:)]

Yuck, sounds horrendously sexist to me. I can provide my own booze just fine thank you very much - and so can every other WOMAN! :D

UCSB Parties>SLO Parties. Everytime I guarantee. SLO visits us to rage.

IV does rage yes. But I also like to avoid falling off the cliff near IV while hammered.

Cal Poly party scene is sufficient for any rager who wants to graduate with passable (or God forbid decent) grades, and avoid serious bodily injuries at an early age.

But yes even as a Poly student, I agree UCSB parties>SLO. But I only need to experience IV once or twice in my life at most.

Free drinks for girls = baiting the honey trap for us brainless males

You will have no problem finding a party at Cal poly SLO. In fact, at some point you may want to cut back to make sure that you graduate and don’t end up on academic probation at this very challenging school.

Cal Poly SLO’s official tag line is “Learn by Doing” it is a hands on program. Unofficially, it is “Work Hard / Play Hard”. It is California after all…

The party scene is great. Unfortunately the UPD has tried to crack down in recent years and the school pretty much hates most of the fraternities.

With that being said though, there is nothing the UPD or Cal Poly can do. There are and will be parties every thursday-saturday (sunday when monday is off!) somewhere in SLO no matter what weekend it is.

Trust me, don’t worry about finding parties, it’s not hard. If you are worried, than join a fraternity. I did, and I go out just about as much as I did before I joined.

Be excited on the other hand that you have the opportunity to go to a nationally renowned university that also has a great party scene.

I have the opposite question…what if you are social, but want fun that does not include getting drunk? About what percent of kids would you say aren’t partiers and what do they do for fun?

This is a school with a lot of STEM majors many of whom are pretty serious students and don’t like to drink. My kid is a good example. He and his buddies like to have fun, but have little interest (actually zero interest) in drinking. I have no percentages or hard facts, but I know that my kid and the majority of his friends fall into this category. There are plenty of kids that like to party hard too. What I am gratified by is that there is no pressure to drink by other students. My kid has been offered opportunities to party like that and declined and that was the end of it. Everyone respects each other and there is no stigma for kids that are non-drinkers, etc. He has never felt pressure to drink or smoke or do anything else.

So OsakaDad, what does your son and his friends do for fun? Do they go to the parties and just not drink? I am just curious as my son is not a drinker either.

He is a photographer, hiker, sometime rock climber, budding chef, and hangs with his clubmates building cool stuff. He is pretty tight with the school newspaper’s ‘official’ photographer and they go to a lot of games (football and basketball, etc.) and take sports action shots from the sidelines. He knows every hiking trail in SLO by now. He is also a bit of a road biker and bought himself a classic refurbished road racer. At night and weekends? Movies, restaurants, and of course video games. His girlfriend visits him on some weekends and they hang out in SLO. There is a lot to do. As far as parties go, probably not too much. He doesn’t like crowds especially rowdy ones – personal choice.

@OsakaDad, that’s awesome, sounds like a neat young man, and busy!

Are Asians URM?

Here’s the stats from the CalPoly website. Asians are 11.9% or first years, and 11% overall.
