@DumbleDad A generic art portfolio is all they really expect from most Art schools coming out of H.S.
@curiositycat333 Thanks, that’s good, because that’s basically what they’re going to get!
What are the chances acceptance letters will come out tomorrow?
@justlookingahead I think if we all “will” it to be so, notifications will all come tomorrow. ;-). Keep in mind with Cal Poly, notifications will be via the portal only and not by Letter.
@Justlookingahead, if they do what they have done in the past, even if the decisions do start appearing in people’s portals tomorrow, but they won’t all come out at once. As folks have mentioned previously, they will release them in the alphabetical order of the colleges and then alphabetical order of the departments within the colleges. It takes a number of days for them to get through everything. My son was accepted as a Mechanical Engineering student on 2/17 last year. Generally speaking, acceptances will come first, then waitlist, then denials. But, there have usually been some straggling decisions as well. You can look at last year’s thread to get a sense of how long the decision rollouts lasted.
Also, as others have said, the decisions will first be posted in the portals. Applicants will eventually get an email, but the time varies for when it shows up. Cal Poly does not send letters in the mail. An acceptance will say “Congratulations” and will also say that you are “conditionally admitted”, which means that you have to finish out your Senior year in high school and not receive any grades lower than a C.
Has anyone heard back on Engineering OOS yet
No, I’m an OOS Engineering and haven’t gotten anything yet. Hopefully we will soon as last year decisions came out the 11th and someone in a previous post mentioned that decisions would be on a similar timeline as last year if not earlier!
Does anyone know if they send decisions out on the weekend?
Nothing yet for OOS agricultural sciences
Do in-state applicants have preference at Cal-poly?
CA state universities have to take 70% in-state kids so yes.
Does this mean that decisions won’t come until next Thursday?
They close At 5 so it’ll probably be around then ? Maybe not ?
My guess is we will not hear until next week sometime.
Why Thursday? Since Monday is the 13th and last year they came out on the 11th should we start hearing on Monday?
I’m guessing because feb 11, 2016 was on a Thursday. @jsvb124
I applied for CS in engineering
Superscore ACT: 34 (35 E, 35M, 33R, 32S)
Gpa: ~ 3.55 unweighted at a very hard public school
In state from San Francisco
I also have a 790 Math SAT 2 and 680 Chem SAT 2
As the very knowledgeable @eyemgh has shared, Cal Poly uses an algorithm called MCA (Multi-Criteria Admission) as the basis for admittance. This is different from the other Cal State schools, which use the Eligibility Index. It would be helpful to future candidates to post your MCA when decisions come out. @Sterny16 created a calculator which figures it for you, which can be found at this link: https://repl.it/EJ7C/0
Details on how your MCA out yourself are below. I’ve had this saved since 2014 when my oldest D was accepted, and here we are again, waiting for #2’s decision:
Academic MCA:
The maximum GPA they will use is 4.2, even though you can have a higher calculated CP GPA. A 4.2 is worth 2250 MCA points. Thus, multiply your CP GPA by 535.7 and you’ll get your MCA points for GPA.
The next biggest thing is test scores. The odd thing, likely because they wanted it to total a nice round number, is that the max score is 1650, even though the max SAT score is 1600. Multiply the total of your best SAT CR and your best SAT math by 1.03125 to get your MCA test points. If you took the ACT, they convert and vice versa.
The third largest section is the class rigor score, worth 750 points. In this section you get zero points for meeting the minimum admission requirements and adders for more than the minimum. The bonuses in order of power are
min semesters max total semesters bonus points per extra semester total possible bonus:
math 6 10 125 500 (note: stats and finite do not count)
lab science 4 8 50 200
English 8 10 50 100
foreign language 4 8 25 100
visual performance 2 4 25 50
no bonus points for social sciences or electives. As with GPA, you can actually score higher than the maximum, but 750 is the most they will count.
Finally, work and ECs, worth 350 points. Work (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/20, 6-10/40, 11-15/60, 16-20/80, 21+/100, add 50 points if work is major related. ECs (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/30, 6-10/60, 11-15/90, 16-20/120, 21+/150, add 60 points for leadership role.
There are also other Non-Academic Bonus Points:
CA vet/701, Hayden Partner School/700, faculty/staff dependent/700, service area of CP/500, either parent with some or no HS, but who DIDN’T GRADUATE FROM HS/300 (per parent).
Here’s how it works. Cal Poly does TWO “READINGS” one of academic only and one after adding additional non-academic bonus adders. The reason I put readings in quotes is that they don’t actually READ them. A computer tallies points and then ranks students.
The first “reading” is used to fill approximately 65% of the class. Presumably that is all of ED plus the first half or so of RD.
Then they add the other non-academic bonus points and re-rank MCAs to fill the final half of RD, approximately 35% of the class.
This totals a minimum of 28 semesters that allows for a student to take 2 semesters of elective classes. An applying student is encouraged to take more than the minimum required semesters and is awarded bonus points for doing so. A student who takes the highest possible number of semesters and gets the maximum amount of bonus points is presented below.
English (10 Semesters; 100 Bonus Points)
Algebra (4 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Geometry (2 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Foreign Language (8 ; 100 Bonus Points)
Lab Science (8 ; 200 Bonus Points)
History (4 ; 0 Bonus Points)
Performing Arts (4 ; 50 Bonus Points)
Advanced Math (4 ; 500 Bonus Points)
As seen above, this student has received a maximum of 950 admission bonus points for their high school curriculum. Notice that extra semesters of Lab Sciences and Advanced Mathematics have a higher weight than the rest of the subjects with respect to the allotment of Bonus points. A student taking 4 extra semesters of Advanced Math results in 52% of the maximum possible bonus points by itself. For each semester that a student is under the minimum required number of courses, a 500 point deduction of admission score
Good luck all. It should be soon, but exactly “when” is anyone’s guess, especially since this is the first year without Early Decision.
Chance me? @luckymom22
