Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO) Vs. Santa Clara

I'm gonna decide tomorrow that I'm going to apply ED.

My top competitors are Santa Clara & USD. I'm majoring in business.

Cal Poly:

-Cheaper
-Kids seemed similar to me
-Beautiful Location
-Great Business Program
-Hands on Learning (fits my personality)
-fun school, but not a super party school (which i like - i like that its still a fun campus without a super party scene, as compared to like sdsu, or ucsb - im not that much of a partier, but do like to pary a bit..)
-Goal to produce career oriented business people (very little liberal arts / character)
-Big Campus (I prefer)
-Laid back

Santa Clara & University of San Diego:

-Business programs ranked slightly higher
-Over 2x as expensive (my parrents have the money, but still..)
-Snobby / Rich / Stylish Kids
-College designed not only to produce a business person, but also to produce character / sprituality (important)
-Beautiful locations
-Small campus

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ED for SLO. 95% sure. But would anyone like to provide some counter arguments before I make my final choice? The only big thing I see really is that SLO is just producing business people, while the others focus more on producing character aswell. Other than that, SLO looks perfect for me. Any thoughts / arguments before I submit the ED to SLO?

Also, would anyone like to make a counterargument for business schools in about the same range admissions wise?? I figure I'd be regected easily at Berk and USC, and barely any UCs have business. id like to stay in CA, but am maybe considering miami.

:) Here you are. Santa Clara’s business is very well regarded in bay area at least. Many internship opportunities and good placement previous years. (not sure this year due to the economy) We visited on the open house day two weeks ago. The new business building is very impressive. Only down size is the cost, more than 2x

I really suggest you do more research before make your decision. Like I said in the other thread, you still have 6 month ahead.

thanks again a_mom. i will, this is part of my research talking to educated people like you. thanks again.

You might want to consider the environment as well. SLO is more of a small college-town and is not close to any large city. USD and SCU will have more of an urban feel. My son is not a ‘city person’ and loves it at CP SLO. He gets around just fine on his bike and the bus system (free with student ID). If you are a ‘city person’, you may not like SLO and might be happier at USD or SCU. All three are great schools - you can’t make a bad choice.

I just got accepted to SLO regular decision! im grateful i didn’t get in early decision to slo now.

I visited SCU last week and LOVED it. I also visited USD, and didn’t quite like the feel. Secretly, I was hoping to get accepted to slo, and rejected to scu, or accepted to scu, and rejected to slo. now my guess is ill get accepted to both. and i love both, so its gonna be a hard choice. they both have pros and cons. if i could get any more opinions on SCU vs. SLO that would be appreciated.

the other colleges id be accepted to most likely would be SDSU, chapman, and usd, if anyone wants to support one of those. but im pretty sure its between scu and slo now.

im 5050 now. SLO is cheaper, more students which I like, and more hands on. But SCU has a better business rankings, gorgeous campus, good alumni connection, everything seemed perfect and run smoothly, and it seems like scu really wants you and treats you as an individual, while at SLO your just a number.

any additional feedback appreciated! everyone at both says they both love both of them!

i’m a sophomore business student at SCU. I also had the same problems as you when i was a senior in high school ( i was deciding between scu, uci, davis and slo). Honestly, I believe i made the best choice and i love SCU to death. I’ve visited all the my friends at the colleges above and they all have different atmospheres. SLO is more of a college town but it was kind of boring when i went there. SCU is small and has a beautiful campus. Everyone is extremely nice and the class sizes are very small. Aside from getting a great business education, the core classes you take help you gain insight in religions, ethics, etc. Socially, SCU has a pretty good party scene (i’m in both a social and business frat). I think the best way to make a choice is to visit a friend at both schools and spend the weekend.

Keep in mind SLO is a state school undergoing crucial CA budget cuts. The SLO you commit to in 2010 might not be the SLO you experience in the next few years. Private schools are obviously exempt from this problem. Lots of conversation from state schools (Cal State and UC campuses) about taking 5 years to graduate instead of 4 due to lack of available required classes. I know this is a rather late response to your comment but something worth keeping in mind. Good luck to you - and congrats on the great options in schools you have worked so hard for. (yes I am a parent).

SLO because it is a lot cheaper and like you said above, it makes you feel welcome and you can relate with the other students.

SLO is cheaper…but I do have to comment here…SCU also makes folks feel welcome and if it’s the school for you…you’ll be able to relate to the other students too!!

Yes you are correct, my apologies. I have not visited SCU I should not be saying that. However from the pros from what LSkaiWalk said was that he could relate more to students at SLO.

im pretty sure im going SLO. but im still thinking about it. any more feedback is appreciated. catharsis, do you want me to go to SLO just so you can get off the waitlist haha?

You have two excellent schools to choose from, and I don’t think you can make a bad decision. Once you decide, commit to attending with a strong work ethic and positive attitude and you will be successful. My child is seriously considering these same two schools (as well as two others). I understand your situation: both beautiful campuses, well regarded schools, perfect weather…you are fortunate to have such a “problem”.

I confess, I am a Cal Poly grad, my husband graduated from SCU. We have several friends that attended both schools. All of us are gainfully employed and enjoyed our college experience. Here is the difference though: The SCU grads really felt that SCU cared about them and wanted nothing but for them to be successful. They were supported throughout their time there. I loved SLO, buy I never felt especially supported. I was just one of 16,000 other students. That is part of what you get with private tuition.

The other part is the ease of getting the classes you need and want. It may not seem like a big deal now when you hear that it might take five years to graduate, but come winter quarter of sophomore year, when you desperately want a class in your major and they are all full, and you resign yourself to taking a class you don’t really want, just so you have enough units to be a full time student, you will be frustrated. And it will likely happen more that once.

If money is not an issue I would look at SCU again. Think of it this way: At Cal Poly you will have to work hard TO graduate in four years. At SCU you will have to work hard NOT TO graduate in four years.

Good luck with your decision. As long as you go in well informed and realistic, I predict you will be fine.

@Lskaiwalk haha nah I’m not that messed up. I did not get into SLO, but if i did I would definitely choose to go there. btw one person wont make a huge difference on the waitlist.

thanks for the feedback.

well, we do have the money for scu. but obviously, the cheaper the better.

and ofcourse its nice to feel wanted, supported, and helped out. but i think i am one of those mature kids who can be self-motivated to figure out the classes / not being helped as much at cal poly slo. also 5 years at slo would still be cheaper than santa clara.

its going to be a tough choice, im still leaning on slo. any more feedback is appreciated. its a good problem to have indeed haha!

I’m in the same boat. Just rejected from my dream school…USC. I was accepted into Cal Poly in mid-February. I didn’t realize that was early.

Do you know anything about the Green Light Program in Business at SLO? If you are in this program (I qualify), you can take Bus. classes the first year and can graduate in 4 years. You can put your general ed classes off until study abroad and take them at that time.

I was also accepted into the Norlin Scholars and B-School at Boulder with schoalrship money. My brother attens there. Great school, but I really want to stay in CA.

I was accpeted to SCU last week. Do they send out scholarship money after acceptance??

Also accepted to B-school at LMU and USD, USD is too close to home. I live in San Diego.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Werty…financial aid packages should be out shortly that will include any scholarships. This assumes that you have completed the FAFSA and CSS profile and have met anu of the other obligations required. The admissions office is accessible, give them a call.

Put USC behind you and look forward to attending one of these great schools that have accepted you.

We have looked at many of the same schools for the business programs, and SCU is still tops for us. The school size, the ethical culture, the opportunity to practice religious studies on campus, the individual attention, the campus and facilities, the business programs and opportunities, the faculty and staff, the reputation and referrals, and the “feeling” when on campus have led us to this decision.

As you know the ultimate decision on where you want to go is yours…listen and stay true to yourself and what kind of environment, studies, and experiences that you think will help you grow through this important time in your life. You have already started this process with some of your thoughts as listed above. Keep at it with full focus and it will come to you and be the right decision.
