I’m gonna decide tomorrow that I’m going to apply ED.

My top competitors are Santa Clara & USD. I’m majoring in business.

Cal Poly:

-Cheaper
-Kids seemed similar to me
-Beautiful Location
-Great Business Program
-Hands on Learning (fits my personality)
-fun school, but not a super party school (which i like - i like that its still a fun campus without a super party scene, as compared to like sdsu, or ucsb - im not that much of a partier, but do like to pary a bit…)
-Goal to produce career oriented business people (very little liberal arts / character)
-Big Campus (I prefer)
-Laid back

Santa Clara & University of San Diego:

-Business programs ranked slightly higher
-Over 2x as expensive (my parrents have the money, but still…)
-Snobby / Rich / Stylish Kids
-College designed not only to produce a business person, but also to produce character / sprituality (important)
-Beautiful locations
-Small campus

I’m pretty sure I’m gonna ED for SLO. 95% sure. But would anyone like to provide some counter arguments before I make my final choice? The only big thing I see really is that SLO is just producing business people, while the others focus more on producing character aswell. Other than that, SLO looks perfect for me. Any thoughts / arguments before I submit the ED to SLO?

Also, would anyone like to make a counterargument for business schools in about the same range admissions wise?? I figure I’d be regected easily at Berk and USC, and barely any UCs have business. id like to stay in CA, but am maybe considering miami.

Have you applied to SCU and USD? If you have any doubt, don’t do ED, even you’re 95% sure. There’s still 6 month before the final call. Many things can change, including your opinion of a certain campus. The 5% could make a swing. ED only helps the boarder line in my opinion. If you have a good stat, you’ll make into the RD. If you stat is low, ED won’t save you either.

i think im exactly borderline is the thing haha.

thanks for the advice though. and i am 95% sure i like slo. i have 3 more days to submit my ED app, i just wanted to hear any opinions to see if i should do it.

i toured slo today and loved it! ive toured usd, and even though it was nice, i didnt like the feel. havnt toured scu yet, but i heard its very similar to usd.

anyways, thanks for the insight! anyone more input?

There are many opportunities to get involved in character building activities/organizations in SLO. If you are Christian, SLO has one of the largest, most active Campus Christian group in the nation (Campus Crusade for Christ). They also have Intervarsity Christian Fellowship on campus. There are many great churches in SLO also. There’s also all kind of opportunities to participate in things like Habitat for Humanity, Walks for the homeless, Engineers without borders, Spring Break and Summer missions trips, etc. There are also clubs for almost every prominant religious group. There is a Community Services student organization that does community service projects even during WOW week. My son’s Material Engineering classs built a storage shelter for a local homeless shelter as a class project. I’m sure you can find as many character/spiritual building opportunities as you want in SLO.

Have you checked out the cost of going to Santa Clara? It’s more than Princeton!! That said, my niece went there and loved it so much she’s working in the Athletic Dept. and going for her MBA. Then again, my son is a Cal Poly freshman and you couldn’t get out of there with a crow bar. Tough choices but a nice problem to have.

My son toured all 3 colleges, applied ED to Cal Poly (on Oct 1) and EA to Santa Clara. He didn’t apply to USD because it didn’t have an electrical engineering major. He’s currently a freshman at Cal Poly and like gotpeter’s son, he’s happy as a clam. In all of our talking to students, parents, grandparents and alums who had any connection to Cal Poly, we heard a consistently positive message. Everyone loves it there.

It really is amazing. I started wearing a Cal Poly cap before my son was accepted and got stopped repeatedly by alums, students and parents, all with big smiles. Not one had a negative thing to say about the school and I always asked about how it could be improved, what they didn’t/don’t like about it, etc… Try as I did I could get nothing critical of any significance from anyone. Being raised in New Jersey I knew this meant some kind of conspiratorial ‘fix’ was in place . . . but, my son went there anyway.

If you’re applying to Business, be aware that you are no longer permitted to pursue more than one concentration within the major due to budget cuts. In the past, students typically double concentrated in Accounting and Finance or Accounting and Info Systems.

Other than that, it’s a great school and a fun town.

I just got accepted to SLO regular decision! im grateful i didn’t get in early decision to slo now.

I visited SCU last week and LOVED it. I also visited USD, and didn’t quite like the feel. Secretly, I was hoping to get accepted to slo, and rejected to scu, or accepted to scu, and rejected to slo. now my guess is ill get accepted to both. and i love both, so its gonna be a hard choice. they both have pros and cons. if i could get any more opinions on SCU vs. SLO that would be appreciated.

the other colleges id be accepted to most likely would be SDSU, chapman, and usd, if anyone wants to support one of those. but im pretty sure its between scu and slo now.

im 5050 now. SLO is cheaper, more students which I like, and more hands on. But SCU has a better business rankings, gorgeous campus, good alumni connection, everything seemed perfect and run smoothly, and it seems like scu really wants you and treats you as an individual, while at SLO your just a number.

any additional feedback appreciated! everyone at both says they both love both of them!

Both are great schools and you can’t really make a bad choice. If $$ is not a factor, consider the difference in environment. CP SLO has more of a college town feel, and there is no major city any where close to SLO. If you are a city person, you may prefer SCU as San Jose and San Franciso are near by. Good luck with your decision.

Well, with the CSU’s a mess. It’d prolly take 5 years. so 5 x 25000 = 125000. While SCU would be 4 years, so 4 x 50,000 = 200,000. Plus I’d have an extra year of work, so 200,000 - 40,000 = 160,000 So it’d be maybe 35,000 expensiver if I went to SCU, but I’d have better business connections afterwards., so financially not big of a deal and my parrents have the money, but still thats money saved.

im more of a suburb person, so that doesnt really matter much.

ok, thanks for your feedback. im liking scu more now because slo will just one dimmensionally train me to be a worker bee, while scu tries to almost 3 demensionally develope the entire person in all aspects.
