Cal Poly SLO Class of 2023 Thread

Sorry I forgot it, it’s Environmental Management

@bri180 Did you just find out about your acceptance today? Congrats!

For Cal Poly you should state your major as your are only weighted against others in your major in terms of acceptance…

what major? @saraowens

@Karate111: As far as I am aware, no yield protection at SLO. It is all done by computer algorithm.

@Karate111 CP does not admit purely on stats AND it’s important to know what stats they do use. ECs and non-academic adders can make a difference. Only CSU GPA matters and only Math and English ACT scores matter.

Why does a state-run school give priority to students who live in a certain part of the state? That doesn’t make sense to me. Do other Cal State’s do it?

@globehead @lilpup97 My daughter began the process to change her major after her 1st qtr (she realized quickly that her chosen major was not going to be a great fit). She had to meet w/Dept head of the major she was in (nutrition) and of the major she wanted to switch into (child development). She entered into a contract which required her to take 3 classes in Child Development earning at least a 3.8 gpa in those 3 classes while also taking a few classes in her current major just in case she did not meet the 3.8 requirement for the switch. The Mustang Center was very helpful in helping her balance her workload (making sure the classes she was taking would cover requirements while still helping her towards her intended major change). It took her 3 qtrs to accomplish the major change and she actually made the Deans List in the process. She began this past qtr (Winter qtr) officially as a Child Development major and going into this Spring Qtr she has enough units to qualify as Junior standing. She works hard but has plenty of fun too! While not a simple process changing your major can def be done.

My daughter did a similar change from Environmental Management to Business. It certainly isn’t easy but it’s possible. The key is good grades.

@globehead: Cal states were set up to give "local " applicants access to good CA universities. All Cal states have local service area preference so the local applicants get priority for being admitted into these CSU’s. SLO and SDSU have been the exceptions but have been pressed to rethink their local admission policies.

Does anyone have a story they could share about changing majors within the College of Liberal Arts? Is it easier to change majors within the same college?

Thank you to all who reply.

Denial came for our daughter the morning, Mechanical Engineering
Don’t have MCA but:
1340 SAT, 3.9 UWGPA, in-state, 4 years marching band, jazz band, pep, band leadership.
That’s OK! She still has great in state (accepted at 5 other CSU’s) and OOS (Texas A&M, Utah, Pitt, Baylor, SMU, Embry-Riddle).
Thank goodness she applied to many schools.

For what it’s worth: admitted to 14 of 15 colleges!
SLO is tough.

Good luck to everyone else!

@sdscoutmom , I know someone who changed from Journalism to English and it was fairly easy. Journalism to English may have proven harder as you have to show you could have been admitted to the program with the appropriate MCA. I believe Journalism is a tougher admit. Regardless, this student had a great gpa so that is key. The student needs to speak with their advisor. They also have to stick out a semester in their intended major. See guidelines:
https://advising.calpoly.edu/change-major

That being said, I have heard of students that have negotiated tougher admits but the stakes are high. For example, you must maintain 3.8 for three semesters, etc. all while taking courses from both majors to be sure. This will of course add to course load. It also depends on the college as I don’t think this situation was in the college of Liberal Arts. But you won’t know until you ask. Best of luck.
