Cal Poly SLO Engineering

So realistically speaking, my gpa is somewhat trashy:
Freshman:3.5
Soph:3.64 W ap euro
Junior: 3.93 W (Apush ap human geography ap english honors chem)
Senior:(I improved drastically) 4.7( AP bio, ap lit, ap calc AB, ap spanish, honors physics)
My sat is a 2050
I have been in orchestra 4 years
Track and field 4 years
Cross country 4 years
CSF lifetime member
World language scholars 1 year.
GPS 4 years ( service club)
An obstacle I’ve dealt with is my struggle with ADD. I have a passion for math and would love to go to cal poly slo for engineering. Any chances or opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks for your time

EDIT: any other UCs that you think might be a match would be a huge help

@AJ4761: You do realize that SLO has already posted decisions along with most of the UC’s? Are you a Junior or a Senior?

Junior. It is best a case senario assumption that I will get that approximate gpa. I have already scored the 2050 on sat though.

SLO uses 9-11th grades for their GPA calculation (only CSU that does include 9th grades), so projected Senior grades will not contribute to your GPA. An upward trend is good, but you have to remember SLO is gotten so competitive, many applicants are denied from SLO but will get accepted into many UC’s.

Use the CSU calculator to calculate your GPA and you can only use UC approved Honors and AP classes for the extra Honors points points: https://secure.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp

Repost with your CSU GPA and I will give my chancing. Also note that the CSU application will not have essays, so you will not be able to address your struggle with ADD. SLO also uses an MCA point system, different from all of the rest of the CSU’s. Here is an explanation of the MCA points. Also only SAT Math + CR scores are used.

The maximum GPA they will use is 4.2, even though you can have a higher calculated CP GPA. A 4.2 is worth 2250 MCA points. Thus, multiply your CP GPA by 535.7 and you’ll get your MCA points for GPA.

The next biggest thing is test scores. The odd thing, likely because they wanted it to total a nice round number, is that the max score is 1650, even though the max SAT score is 1600. Multiply the total of your best SAT CR and your best SAT math by 1.03125 to get your MCA test points. If you took the ACT, they convert and vice versa.

The third largest section is the class rigor score, worth 750 points. In this section you get zero points for meeting the minimum admission requirements and adders for more than the minimum. The bonuses in order of power are (min semesters/max total semesters/bonus per extra semester/total possible bonus): math 6/10/125/500 (note: stats and finite do not count), lab science 4/8/50/200, English 8/10/50/100, foreign language 4/8/25/100, visual performance 2/4/25/50, no bonus points for social sciences or electives. As with GPA, you can actually score higher than the maximum, but 750 is the most they will count.

Finally, work and ECs, worth 350 points. Work (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/20, 6-10/40, 11-15/60, 16-20/80, 21+/100, add 50 points if work is major related. ECs (hours per week/bonus): 0/0, 1-5/30, 6-10/60, 11-15/90, 16-20/120, 21+/150, add 60 points for leadership role.

There are additional points for First Generation/Veterans/Applicant from local schools and child of an employee.

Fabulous information. I have seen some of this but not all of this. Do they only use the Weighted GPA? My son (#3 of four kids) is a Junior and Cal Poly Engineering is #1 on our list right now. He will have 11 AP classes by the end of Senior year but suddenly he is pulling B’s in those classes. The weighted GPA might be a 4.1 by application time next year… I started thinking we are already “out” with out the 4.5–ish GPA.

He’ll max points in upper Math and Adv Science. Only two years of ASL. Cannot fit an extra year of ENG but have wondered if two years of AP English will help??

Liked seeing the points for EC’s—lots of leadership, tons of community service, all documented…
Anyway, looks like thinking too much about Cal Poly is not a good idea. Great school but very “in demand”

I cannot take credit for the MCA score info, that belongs to @eyemgh. Just copied the info for future reference. SLO is a mystery to me when it comes to admissions since you see posted stats and MCA scores you think should have gotten accepted. All he can do is apply and hope for the best. Not too many applicants get all 5 years of English. Most of the bonus points are for extra Math and Science classes, so that is the area where I would focus my efforts.
