I got denied
Major: Mechanical Engineering
IGETC:Done for UCs
Plan B : Done for Cal States
Major Prep: Done last semester
Recommended: Finished with all by this semester
GPA: 3.78
EC’s: Tutoring, Supplemental Instructor, VP of a club
I think I was denied because I screwed up the supplemental portion of my application. I wish I could of changed it before the deadline but they wouldn’t let me. I think I’m gonna appeal to see if I can try to get in. This was my other school I wanted to get in if UC Berkeley doesn’t accept me.
@sugarbabies3 I know someone who got accepted as a senior for environmental engineering for Fall 2016 so it might be because of the amount of transferable units that he completed.

From Cal Poly’s website:
*Credit for Community College Courses
Course credit earned at regionally accredited community colleges is evaluated by the Evaluations Unit in accordance with the following provisions:
Community college credit is allowed up to a maximum of 105 quarter units (70 semester units) toward overall units for the degree. Credits earned above this allowable maximum may still be used to satisfy specific subject and grade point requirements, but may not be applied toward the total count of units required for graduation (Example: a student in a 180-unit program, who has 110 quarter units of community college credit, all of which satisfies subject requirements, must still complete 75 units of non-community college work [not 70 units]).
Upper division credit is never granted for community college work.
The 105-unit limit does not apply to work from four-year institutions; however, specific course requirements, as well as Cal Poly residency requirements, must still be met, regardless of the number of units transferred from four-year institutions (see “Academic Residence Requirements” under “Minimum Requirements for Graduation.”*

You cannot be anything more than a junior-level transfer if you are only using CCC units because they simply don’t accept anything more than 70. Units beyond 70 will be factored into GPA and fulfilling subject requirements, but they don’t count towards graduation requirements, i.e. the X amount of units required to graduate a program.
I’m sitting on 100+ CCC units and I was accepted. My application lists my academic level as junior.
In the end, this might mean nothing and had to bearing on the denial, but you don’t transfer at senior level simply with CCC units.
I am going to begin the appeal process.
Whoops. Typo in my last post. The last sentence should be:
“In the end, this might mean nothing and had no bearing on the denial, but you don’t transfer at senior level simply with CCC units.”
So it could have been some weird fluke in their system but it could still possibly be irrelevant to their decision.
I would call and ask specifically about the junior vs senior standing and see if that’s a mistake or if it would have any affect on your application.
Not open today but I will find out tomorrow.
@calpoly101 yes, it is true that they do not see transcripts before acceptance. But there is an area on the application where you put your expected GPA. Just one of those things we will never really know what they take into consideration.
@collegetimemfr Hi! I have not taken the highest level of Chemistry they require, Human Physiology, Microbiology and O Chem for the Nutrition major. There are more requirements if you pick a concentration, and I do not believe I declared that on my application.
But besides that I believe that it. I changed my app as well as schedule a couple times so it has changed a bit.
If you are between 90-134 units completed at CCC, Cal Poly SLO qualifies you as junior. Seniors have 135+ units. That must be why some of you got denied for being placed as seniors instead of juniors. It’s on their website.

Scroll to the way bottom, you’ll see it.
That only applies to units earned at Cal Poly. Think about it, you cant transfer to a 4 year as anything beyond a junior because you cant take anything higher than a second year level class at a CCC.
@MechEngr18 Units earned at a California community college are not the same as units earned at Cal Poly (or any other 4 year institution). People coming in with 100+ semester units from a CCC are capped at 70 units, meaning that, more or less, they factor in 70 of the units towards a degree and ignore the rest.
Also, I have over 100 semester units and was accepted and am listed as a junior. People with only CCC units shouldn’t be considered seniors, so it’s definitely odd.
@kpm2014 oh okay thank you for letting me know! So did you take Chem 1A (1st semester of gen Chem) and anatomy? What about human nutrition or the food culture/customs class? Haha and then for work/ extra curricular how many hours did u put down? Sorry for all the questions but I am truly curious
Oh and did u take cell bio?
@kpm2014 also congratulations for getting in!! That’s amazing!
Does Cal Poly SLO have on-campus apartments specifically for transfers? Or are the apartments only for the freshman?
@kpm2014 Wait expected Gpa?? I put what I had at the time
@kpm2014 I honestly just don’t understand how I was rejected…the average acceptance for psych was a 3.39 I had a 3.76 and work and had volunteer hours and was head of a club…it just doesn’t make sense to me. I wish they would at least say why so I know and didn’t accidentally do something wrong on my application
@rainrain615 Transfers can live on campus at PCV!
I called admissions about the “senior” academic level listed on the application status. They said that it should have no baring, it’s just what the website does if you have x amount of units. That once accepted, and they receive/review your transcripts THEN they will give an actual standing. But in the mean time it’s just something the website generates and has no affect on whether or no you get accepted/denied/waitlisted.
She also said that there were over 600 applicants for 30 slots this year for mechanical engineering.
Ahhh, interesting.
Re: mech engineering, yeah that makes it rough when it’s that competitive. I’m in a similar boat for my first choice school, though it has 3x more slots but 3x (or more) applicants. It’s the nature of the beast that GREAT students won’t make it in simply because there are so few slots.
Thanks for the follow up.
@calpoly101 I’m sorry you didn’t get in! I know that feeling, it’s not fun. Yeah, it’s hard to know. It’s easy to mess something small up, and sometimes, in my opinion, the state schools are RANDOM! I’ve known people who have had 4.0s, gotten into Berkeley and UCLA but not Cal Poly. I would suggest looking over your app, and maybe there is something you can use to appeal with. And yes they ask for your GPA for Fall 2015, but when the app was due those aren’t done/released yet.
