Update: didn’t get in. Instead of asking me for a portfolio, the arch. dep. just denied me early. If you want into SLO for architecture you HAVE to have their desired and required major prep courses. So it’s USC or Pomona for me.
Major: City & Regional Planning CAED
IGETC: yes - following spring '16 semester at current CC
Major Prep: mostly with one major problem ( I have completed all required except pre-calculus I work fulltime and could not take the prerequisites at my CC) I have also completed all the desired except one that isn’t offered in N Cal
GPA: 4.0 (3.96 overall I got a B in one nontransferable class) i currently have 57 transferable credit and 80 total (completed Associates degree in business real estate)
ECs: I work full time in the Lake County Assessors Office and am a member of Phi Theta Kappa (I did not mention these on my application because the job is not directly related to the major and I am not currently active in Phi Theta Kappa) do you think it is too late to edit the application
@jetjosh sorry but it’s too late to make any changes to your app now. That deadline passed on January 15. Even so, your membership in PTK doesn’t really matter to cal poly and neither does your work. There were only two very general questions on the transfer app that were related to work and ECs. One asked if you worked, if it was related to your major, and how many hours a week on average. The other asked if you participated in any extracurriculars, if you held a leadership role, and how many hours a week on average.
And I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t think you’re getting accepted. Cal poly is a stickler with completing major prereq classes by the spring semester prior to transferring; you not being able to take pre-calculus is most likely going to get you an auto reject. The only thing that would make your not taking pre-calc ok is if that class (or an equivalent) wasn’t offered at your school at all. Right now, it doesn’t matter if it conflicted with your schedule. They’ll see you didn’t complete it and they most likely won’t consider you a competitive applicant. Again, I’m not trying to be rude-- I just wanted to point that out since it’s a pretty big red flag for them. Either way, good luck getting in (you never know, they could overlook that one class and be generous with your acceptance!)
@jdnoble I can’t believe they didn’t accept you with that gpa. Did you complete all the physics and calculus classes? I applied last year and got denied this early because I didn’t have them. They haven’t said anything this time.
@ntweeter I figured it was a big oops when I found it on their webpage ( I also assume I won’t get accepted but you never know) I also applied to Pomona which didn’t have the requirement so I have alternatives and can always try again next year. I am a true believer in what happens happens for a reason!!! Good luck everyone
Out of state (from University of Washington)
Major: Business Admin (Accounting)
IGETC: Mostly, minus the upper division elective and an art or something.
Major Prep: Yes.
GPA: 4.0
ECs: Summer internship in the finance/accounting field, volunteer work at my church, etc.
I know its super late, but I never got an email from the school saying anything about the portal. Any thoughts on what that means?
San Joaquin Delta College
Major: Architecture
IGETC: Completed
Major Prep: missing one required physics class. I listed it in my application, but it got full before I could add it this spring. I plan to take it over the summer, but I don’t know if they will accept that.
GPA: 3.7
EC: volunteer work
Just went for a tour at Cal Poly, I had also reached out to a member of the psychology faculty who I had met at a psychology convention, she invited us to sit in our her class and also took us to lunch to answer questions, it was a magical day! It was emphasized on the tour just how difficult it is to get in as a transfer student there. The amount of slots depends on how many students drop out and with such a wonderful program many stay. For the liberal arts college (which umbrellas many majors, psychology included,) they take about 4% of applicants. I looked at the thread from last years transfer applicants and there were students applying to engineering, arch, business, and psychology with 4.0 gpa’s who did not get in AND they took all required classes, there just are not enough seat for applicants. It is easier to transfer for less impacted majors such as dairy science. I wish with having such low acceptance statistics that a personal statement would be accepted. O! and we discovered that for electives you can do some great things outside of your major such as ice cream making… you make pints of ice cream from cows milked on campus and take them home that is the whole class, wine making, horse grooming… I love that the motto is learn by doing!
Good luck to everyone! I will share in heartbreak if not accepted, but just remember that if you do not earn a slot, it is Not because you are not a fantastic student… the school just needs to start accepting more transfers
@jdnoble I would have to disagree with @ntweeter on that one. Are you coming from Crafton Hills or Valley? I went to both. I had the same issue where major classes required for transfer were in short supply or just not available at all within 50 miles (I’d have to go to Chaffey). I transferred into electrical engineering without a single electrical class - and there were at least two “required” from what I remember. I did have IGETC and the CSU Breadth completed, however, with a 3.9 GPA. So there’s still a chance for you.
Major: Mechanical Engineering
IGETC: Mostly done (still in progress)
Major Prep: Calc I-III, Linear Alg (in progress), Physics I-III, Chem I, Statics, Computer-aided design (CAD), intro to ME.
GPA: 3.57 - applied with a 3.18
ECs: going to be interning this summer
I sure hope I can get it. I repeated two non-major courses this fall and got A’s in both, bumping up my GPA massively. It’s a shame they didn’t let me adjust the application.
I got an F Fall semester in a design course that isn’t a required or desired course and even with the F I’ll still be over the 60 unit minimum. I have all required and desired courses done or they are in progress. Any thoughts on this regarding my possible acceptance/having it revoked?
So from what I’m reading, it doesn’t look like any of us are going to know until about April?
@nbsteele pretty much. They say on their website that they’ll notify all transfer applicants by April 1st.
I don’t necessarily think GPA is a major impact for the majors. Of course it matters, but looking at the average GPA acceptance rate, it may look as though they want more people who have gotten internship and have done plenty of ECs but come average or below average with GPA standpoints. Like for engineering, the average transfer GPA acceptance rate is 3.55. All those engineers who applied with a 4.0 or close must not have the experience compared to the lower-end of the GPA. This is all from my standpoint though of course, because a friend of mine had about a 3.9 and had finished all the required and desired courses he could possibly take, but had very minimal experience, if not any. By minimal experience, I mean EC’s and internships. He got rejected by SLO and got accepted into UCSB. This is my first year in college and I’m doing well so far, I want to reassure myself that there is a way that will guarantee a way into SLO for engineering, but I just can’t. I wish we knew how to get in and what they select based on criteria, but it’s hard to justify what they want. I understand they have those courses online and such, but what else do they want that will chose one from another.
@MechEngr18 As a transfer student, on my 2nd year at SLO, I will also confirm what you’re suspecting about GPA and ECs. Every transfer I’ve talked to here has one thing in common - they’ve all had jobs. I don’t remember what the application asks, but I’m sure it asks whether or not you worked. I worked 40 hours/week and maintained a 3.9 GPA, along with being a reservist, so I’m sure that’s what boosted me besides the GPA.
Likewise, I got into UCLA without 3 of the required courses (The site even says you will not be considered without these courses). What that means to me is that UCLA, or any other UC school, will actually read through your package and make a holistic admission decision. I had a similar issue coming into SLO, but got in as well however.
Work hard in community college, outside the classroom too.
@c172pilot How long have you been at community college and how long did you have an internship or job? My plan is to go to community college and finish everything I need to do there for SLO and other UC’s in 3 years. I will have 92 units done by the end of it. I, so far, have not gotten an internship. I will be getting one soon though. I don’t know if I can work 40 hours a week because of school and everything. 40 hours seems a lot to me, especially when I’m taking 3 or 4 classes at once that requires most of my attention. Can you give me some advice or anything on getting in and how you did it? Should I complete the 92 units or take my chances and do less for SLO? If I only focused on SLO, I would probably be planning to do 20 units less, but risking my guarantees of getting into UCs. I just don’t know what to do. Sorry if I’m going off topic on this thread, I know I shouldn’t but its a question worth asking for all transfer students who are paranoid and anxious on wanting to know the steps of getting into the school they wish to get into. Thank you so much @c172pilot.
I was at the CC for 3 years, exactly as you are planning. And that is good you’re budgeting for 3 years, because you just really can’t transfer in 2 years anymore - unless of course you have a lot of AP credits, in which case you probably would have gone straight to the university anyway.
I never had an “internship” while at the CC; it will be very hard to get an internship because you just don’t have any applicable coursework completed. And I WOULD NOT suggest working 40 hours a week, I did it out of financial necessity - and I maintained around 14-17 units each semester. Working part-time during the academic year would be beneficial though.
When I transferred, I had 73 units I believe; I’m not sure how you will have 92 units unless you’re starting at the lowest English, Math, etc. I started fairly low in math. And with these 73 units I had ALL UC requirements (IGETC) completed as well as CSU GE breadth.
My suggestion, for all transfers, complete the IGETC and CSU breadth. Keep your options open. The biggest difference is that the CSU requires speech, just take a speech class.
Other than that, the only thing you can do is work hard and apply!
@c172pilot Thank you for the response! I’m actually starting with the first transferable english course and Calculus 1 in community college. For UCLA, they wanted more courses such as coding classes and more engineering courses. Cal Poly SLO only wants a few engineering courses and no coding classes. If you take those classes out, I will most likely be around 73 myself with IGETC completed. I left those courses on my plan work for later semester so that I would be able to change my mind if I decide to only go for SLO, but I am afraid to only go for SLO and compromise my 3-year plan if I don’t get in. My college has that doing classes only during the spring, so if I don’t take it next year or the year after and I don’t get into Cal Poly SLO, I could be at community college for 5 years just taking those two classes. I can’t risk that. I’ll try my best of course to get into SLO and hope for the best. Thanks again
Term Applying for Transfer: Fall 2016
Community college gpa: 2.94
Major applied: Chemical Engineering
Status: Decision Pending
Hey guys!
Other CSUs and UCs I applied to have either required applicants to submit a supplemental application or updated transcripts. Cal Poly doesn’t have anything correct?
