Cal Poly SLO major - Econ, Math, Stats, or Business (accounting/finance)

I’m trying to help my son figure out what major to choose for his SLO app… He doesn’t really know what he wants to do, but really likes math. For someone who doesn’t know what he wants to do, why not choose the major that’s easier to get into? Or maybe choose the one that would be really hard to transfer into later? Anyway, can anyone comment on the competitiveness of being admitted to any of these majors, versus the others?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. (If anyone wants to comment on these majors in general and their usefulness in career, that’s something else we’re thinking on.)

Based on SLO target projections, Business Admin/Finance and Econ have around the same acceptance rate of 28%. Mathematics around a 21% acceptance rate and Stats around 50%. 2 majors are in the Business College and 2 in the College of Mathematics and Science. The most competitive and difficult majors to transfer for later will be in the College of Engineering. If he is a solid student, it should not be too difficult to switch between these majors as long as he meets all the requirements. Any of these majors are going to result in good careers. I know several Math/Stat majors that are doing well in the financial fields.

Gumbymom, you made my day!!! Happy Thanksgiving!

Of those, I’d choose math. There are lots of things that you can do with a math degree. Are physics or engineering in the running?

Eyemgh, thanks for replying. He likes physics, and may someday like engineering, but has no idea what it really even is at this point.

Have you calculated his MCA?

I have…I think I did it right. Just not sure what constitutes a leadership role. But it is, minimally, 3503, or 3563. I know it’s very low. :frowning: Seriously, is it a complete waste of time to apply to math or stats or business, or is it one of those “Well, you never know(s)”?

Just reading some more. (Found the whole section on SLO. Geesh.) Are there some rigor points for Senior year honors classes? Don’t know how to add that in, if so. My son is taking two honors classes at present.

You likely calculated wrong. Here’s the thread that’ll walk you through it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19077718/#Comment_19077718
