is cal state long beach a really good school like some people say?

Not sure how good it is, but it is my son's first choice. He has already applied. :)

I think Cal Poly SLO would be a better choice for Cal States.

Perhaps, but isn't admissions more competitive?

cal state long beach is one of the best state schools. i have heard plenty of good things about it. everyone i know who went their enjoyed it and had a good experience. in my opinion, the best csu's in order (and competiveness in admissions) would be:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

SDSU

CSULB

Cal State Long Beach is an excellent school. I would rank it after Cal Poly SLO in academics, although SDSU (thanks in part to its fabulous location) is probably slightly harder to get into. CSULB has many top notc programs and an excellend faculty. If your child plans to live on campus, he should apply for a housing priority number now!

Does anyone know if Long Beach counts senior year grades for admission.

can you really apply for a housing priority number before you are accepted at Long Beach?

also, how does CSU Monterey Bay rank with the CSU's? It has actually been recommended to us over Long Beach.

Monterey is kinda the black sheep of the Cal State System - rarely mentioned, rarely suggested (outside of the area) ... but I'm sure a decent school.

San Diego State DEFENITLY comes before CSULB, btw.

We have kind of tended to discount SDSU because of the party school rep; why do you place it ahead of Long Beach?

Academically it is a stronger, better regarded school.
Yes - it is a party school - but that doesn't mean it isn't well thought of for acadmic quality.

disagree about SD being "better regarded." Perhaps some its programs like business, but otherwise they're pretty comparable to the outside world, i.e, employers. SLO is clearly the #1 Cal State.

I have intelligent friends that go to both San Diego State and Long Beach... both are excellent choices, although I think that Long Beach has a bit more of the 'commuter' rep--my friends at SDSU lived in the dorms their first year whereas only one of my friends at Long Beach lived in the dorms their first year... both are very comparable I feel in most regards.

Regarding housing -- both CSULB and SDSU allow you to apply for housing priority numbers before you are accepted. And you definitely should!

there is no way csulb is better than sdsu. SDSU is better academically (and socially) and it is much harder to get into. top 3 cal states would be
1. cal poly slo
2. sdsu
3. csulb

"SDSU is better academically (and socially) and it is much harder to get into."

check the stats on this before stating that. i believe long beach has a lower acceptance rate (although this does not meen necessarilly a better school or better quality of student), and just as high a gpa and sat average if not higher than sdsu. i would agree sdsu is better socially if you feel partying hard is a good social life. sdsu is not respected any more in my opinion than is long beach, and im from sd. both are looked at as two of the best three state schools in california, almost exact equivalents with each other. im not sure where people get off that sdsu is superior to long beach, last time i checked i believe cal poly slo had significantly better stats than both long beach and sdsu. sdsu and long beach's stats were almost identical if i remember correctly, with long beach having a lower acceptance rate. sdsu, in my opinion does have a much better location, as san diego is awesome. but better accidemically is a strecth. neither school is exactly what you refer to as the academic powerhouse in the area. if your looking for academics and/or prestige, both school's uc neibors are where thats at. sdsu has ucsd next door and it takes the clout in sd, while csulb has ucla next door and it takes the clout in la. if your argueing about prestige, between two schools as equal as csulb and sdsu, and prestige and academics are important to you, attend ucsd or ucla. if you want a good education with more personalized attention you cant go wrong with sdsu or csulb.

CSULB Stats
SAT I Verbal mean score for incoming freshman class: 504
SAT I Math mean score for incoming freshman class: 523
ACT mean score for incoming freshman class: 20

SDSU Stats
SAT I Verbal mean score for incoming freshman class: 527
SAT I Math mean score for incoming freshman class: 547
ACT mean score for incoming freshman class: 22

weird those arent the stats i saw. well it looks as though sd is slightly tougher admission stat wise. so i guess my orignial ranking of csu's is probably right. i thought i saw both schools had around a 3.5 gpa average, but gpa average isnt posted on csu mentor.

Cal Poly SLO
SDSU
CSULB

i got a hard decision to make.
i am currently accepted to SDSU and i think i am accepted to CSULB,
i am going to major in graphic design. which university should i chose to go?

its a toss up. visit both schools and see where you feel most comfortable. They are both good schools with a good atmosphere. Make sure you visit both before making up your mind. Best of luck!
