If I got a D in Calculus I at ARC do I have to take a placement test at Davis or can I transfer my D and retake Calculus I at Davis to replace my D?
I just realized I should probably tell you that ARC is a community college
Please help!
Lol I go to ARC too. I think you could retake it at Davis since you were already able to get into calc I don’t think there’s a need to take a placement test. You need to update you course history thing on the admissions page and change your grade. Also make sure w a counselor! Bc if this is for spring it might affect your acceptance since they have an agreement before you sir
I don’t go to ARC. I took Calc I at ARC over the summer last year and I put the D on my UC application and UC Davis accepted me anyways… I am a senior in high school not a college student yet
Uh yeah, just for reference the ARC here is the gym. I was confused for a couple seconds reading the first post, haha.
As far as the placement test, you should have to take it. This says that everyone enrolling in MAT 12, 16A, 17A, or 21A must take the placement exam: https://www.math.ucdavis.edu/undergrad/math_placement/ . And with a D in calc 1, you’d be starting in one of those classes.
Just the fact that you’ve taken calculus (even if you got a D in it) means that the placement exam shouldn’t be an issue. Heck, I know people who never took precalc at all who placed into calculus. If you can’t place into calculus, then you definitely need the lower classes to brush up on your math skills.
@PhantomVirgo Okay but Davis would let someone who got a D in Calc I retake it without taking a placement exam so why would I have to take the placement exam after already talking Calculus at another college? Also, I am just afraid because my friend who got a 5 on the Calc AB exam and is currently in Calc BC with an A got placed into pre-calc at his college…I mean I know he gets to move on because he passed the AP test and may pass the BC one but it’s scary that he got placed so low
Don’t ask me. I don’t make the policies. Double check with an adviser and ask; there may be some policy that’s not written out on the website that they have in place.
What you’re describing for your friend was pretty much my situation freshman year: I had the AP credit to skip MAT 21A and just needed to take the placement so I could skip to 21B. Basically I could’ve placed into precalc and taken MAT 21B thanks to my AP credit, but I wouldn’t have been able to take MAT 21A if that happened. I believe now they require you to place into the prereq course before skipping it with AP credit, because I remember my orientation leader explaining the policy to me and saying they were working on changing it. But at least a few years ago, it was perfectly possible to place into precal and end up in MAT 21B or 21C depending on your AP credit.
Incidentally, I ended up passing the placement with zero trouble (after not taking any kind of math senior year, for what it’s worth) and took 21A for review and an easy class. People make a big deal out of the placement exams, but they’re really not that bad and you’ll have no trouble with them if you’re actually ready to take these classes. Pretty much every year there’s someone freaking out a bit, then once they take it they come back and post that they can’t believe they were worried about it.
Even if you do place into MAT 12, think of it as reinforcing your skills and possibly being an easy A if you’re already solid on precal…and really, you’ll be a quarter behind the typical sequence in math but it’s not a big deal at all. I didn’t take MAT 21A until winter quarter freshman year (scheduling issues fall quarter) and finished a CS major a quarter early. I know someone who wasn’t taking MAT 21C until his senior year as a CS major (long story, he never elaborated though) and is still graduating on time. You’ll be fine regardless of your placement.
