Calculus II

So, because I was uneasy about my calculus BC AP exam, I decided to take the Calculus II class at a CC in order to make sure that I am eligible for Multivariate freshman year. Here is the problem though, if my AP does come out with a 4 or more, than I am considering dropping the course. I personally think that it could go either way between a 3 and 4 at this point.

My father is strongly against dropping anything. As far as he says a W on a transcript sounds ringing bells to any college during my graduate school admissions. I just want to know -would it really be that bad? In addition, I am unsure if I can balance this and linear algebra (taken at a State University) out at the same time. It is really tiring me out having to take these two courses. Linear Algebra is really difficult and two days I just don't have time to do all of the homework assigned online because i have to get to Calc class.

Now, if I do get a 3 (or lower god forbid =/) on the AP test, I won't have any problems in continuing what I am doing currently, it was what this class was meant for. In addition, I might take the course just to get a refresher on the calc concepts. On top of that, if the CC transcript is looked at then I might be at a significant disadvantage since it is very low (3.2 =/, High School GPA is 3.64)

In most colleges, you can drop a class up until halfway through the semester and not receive a W on your transcript. Look up what your school’s policies are.

I think you should not drop the class. You can get a 4 on the AP calculus exams and not know much. I got a 5 on Calc AB and didn’t understand calculus. It took a college course with an amazing professor to finally get a good feel for the concepts.

Taking mathematics at a university is different than taking mathematics in high school or community college. They will expect you to be more proficient at math than what APs and community colleges expect. Check out these (totally sweet) notes: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~ghrist/notes/calculus2/</a> If you can follow the notes and are comfortable with their content, you’ll be fine for calc III.

silence_kit is correct. Go to the CC’s website, pull up their full catalog (usually in pdf form) and find the withdraw policy section stating the last day in a semester to withdraw without a W.

People get Ws for all sorts of reasons that are beyond their control like illness, an accident, etc.

That said, I’d stick with the course because the quality of AP courses varies widely and the test is just on numerical metric on your abilities which may not mean that you know it well but that you know it well to get a particular score.

You should also be able to handle two college courses during the summer unless you’re otherwise busy (job, internship) or you’re taking the six-week-type courses which can be pretty intensive. You’re going to be taking four or five of these during the regular semester.

Yea, i forgot to tell you - linear algebra is a six week course, where I have to meet MTWTH from 10-12. Calc is a twelve week course on the other hand, meeting MW. The problem I really seem to be handling is with Calc II, which is a late night course. Although I understand the material to an extent, I really get tired because it is a 6:30-9:20 course. I haven’t gotten great grades, pretty average so far. The biggest problems arise on Wednesday since I have to eat and travel, which total to at least 2-3 hours, excluding traffic, leaving me 3 hours to get my linear algebra HW done (which may or not be posted online -teacher does not have a consistent time for putting up HW) and make sure that I understand the material for Calc, which has a quiz/test every other Wednesday.

Guess I need to just organize my time better to relieve some of my pressure, but I think (if I am getting this right), a W isn’t going to be as alarming as my father described it - providing a good reason. The reason why I would consider dropping the class is because I have only taken one of the tests with the other two on the way.

Thanks for the help, I won’t be thinking about this until I get my scores. Happy 4th of July in addition

EDIT: to answer whether or not dropping the class would be considered a withdrawal, it passed on June 11th. So yea…

A few W’s isn’t horrible. What I was saying though, is that you may not receive one if it is still early in the term.

lol silence_kits website with notes…that is some cool handwriting, would make an awesome Font

Hahaha… Someone should suggest Professor Ghrist to sell his handwriting. Btw, his handwriting on a blackboard looks exactly the same!

Ok, so things went as planned and I got a 4 in Calculus BC. Here are somethings that I realize being in the college equivalent class.

My school skipped some topics (although ones that were somewhat unimportant), ones that I don’t understand in class

I really can’t do night classes very well and my grade is suffering - and additionally making my Linear Algebra grade suffer.

You REALLY forgot a lot of stuff in a matter of two months O_O - i totally forgot some basic techniques in calc.

I really want to review for Multivariate and prelearn the topics to have an easier time. Realistically I probably won’t be as inclined to do much until my Linear Algebra class ends.

So, what would you guys suggest as a free or cheap website or place that would offer me information in Multivariable Calculus. I used to always try CTY online learning with Johns Hopkins for this kind of stuff, I don’t know if they offer it, but it is a WONDERFUL tool.

I want to switch to auditing, but the deadline passed - I have until July 24th to drop the class with a W, but my test is July 15th, so I probably want to make a definite decision by then. I am probably going to go to the guidance offices and see what can be arranged to me to audit the class because of my new circumstances.

Try entering in the url I posted earlier in the thread into your web browser but change the 2 in /calculus2/ on the end to a 3.

LOL that simple? Haha thanx - this will be GREAT.
