Calculus Placement Exam

21-121 is Integration and differential eqtns
21-123 is Calculus of Approximation
21-122 is Integration, Diff. Eqtns, and Approximation

So basically, 21-121 + 21-123 = 21-122 i think

ohhh nice equation there. i guess i'm on pace to meet all the requirements then.

what all topics were covered in the exam?

i am using the "forgotten calculus" book. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764119982/sr=8-1/qid=1150581089/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6004973-4039113?%5Fencoding=UTF8

will it be sufficient as a review before taking the test?

yes, ssechrist is right.

A good amount of the test isn't even calculus. If you forgot how to do something it's multiple choice so you can just work backwards from the answers.

Is there a placement test for discrete math available for MCS students?

As far as I know, the discrete math placement (meaning test so you can skip 21-127, Concepts of Math) is only in the CS department, but if you believe you really do have previous experience and know the stuff that would be covered, contact your advisor to see if there is a placement test.

Even if your major is not CS, you can contact Catharine Fichtner (Undergraduate Student Administrator, CS) once you reach on campus to take the discrete math placement test.

just gave the test....got 34/40...found 2 questions from topics i hadn't done before (do they consider this?) so i just left those....

My understanding is that the placement test will be considered part by part. For instance, my overall score did not come out great because I had never taken differential equations (my school did not offer it), but I only missed one problem on the rest of the test. For the differential equations part, I knew the one about convergence from Calc BC, but didn't know the rest of them so I left them blank as the instructions said to do. Let's put it this way, I'm definitely hoping (and it wouldn't make sense) that my poor score on differential equations does not prevent me from placing out of Calc BC as I scored a 5 on the AP and a 1580 on SAT I + SAT II (IIc) Math.

speaking of AP tests, does anyone know when we get our AP scores for this year?

My college counselor e-mailed me last week telling me to expect them the week of July 10th. Hope that helps.

38/40...thank god

i made careless mistakes on section 1 and 4...section 5 was damn hard...i basically did guess and check for half the questions in section 5, because I forgot how to do them...

26/40.

I basically did good on the 1st 3 sections (23/27) but got only 3/13 on the last 2 (differential & integration).

Which course will i be placed into? Any idea?

Sachit, I think you will most likely be placed into 21-122, from what I heard about it from upperclassmen...

Is 21-120 (differential and integral calculus) harder than taking both 21-111 and 21-112 (Calc 1 and 2)?

I don't know, but 21-120 is the class taken by computer science and engineering majors, so I think it would be more intensive. I don't think you can really compare hardness of a one semester course to that of a two semester course sequence.

If anyone has any questions they missed/don't understand feel free to PM me with them.

do you have to take the test in one sitting? can you do one section and then stop and move to the other one?

i just took the test and got 35/40..

got one wrong on elementary functions,
two on differentiation, and two on differential equations...

i'm in engineering, and got a 5 on Calculus BC as well as AB subscore..
where do you think cmu would put me..?

21-259 or 21-260 would be too high for me, i guess....?
well, what about 21-123...? do you think i'll match here...??
