Calling All Fall 2011 College Freshmen: Let's start a complete college packing list!!

(Ok, I think this is the best forum to put this thread in- if anyone has a better idea, let me know!)

Ok, I'm done with high school as of Thursday, and graduation is next week. As many more of us on CC get done with high school, I imagine everyone is going to start thinking more about what they need for college. I don't want to forget any important stuff, and I'm sure no one else does either. A good way to prevent that would be to help each other remember important things we need. I'll start the list here, and I'd like the rest of you to contribute to the list as you start thinking about what people need for college. We have the whole summer to compile this list, and in the next couple months, we should be able to have everything on here.

Probably a good deadline is about August 1st or so to get this done. That way, it will be ready before anyone has to leave for college, and it will give everyone a few weeks still to finish finding/buying everything they need. I don't know when everyone has to leave- I have to leave August 15th, so I imagine August 1st is soon enough.

I'll start a list here, and feel free to add anything to it that is either required or helpful to have for college, in your opinion. Please copy and paste the list from the previous post, and then add your ideas to either the top or bottom of it. If you can, you could even add things in-between into the appropriate categories. If necessary, start a new category/group. I'll try to reorganize this list once a week or so as it gets messy.

Reminder: I'm a music major, so some of the things on my original list here are things most people can ignore. For whatever your major is, you can even add a category "x majors packing list" somewhere for other people that may need it. Other than that, I'm thinking most of the things we'll think of apply to most college freshmen, regardless of their major.

Boys- I'm a girl, so there's a good amount of stuff on here that you can obviously ignore (or slightly edit to fit the male equivalent of certain items). You are welcome to add boys-only stuff also. If we get a great amount of girls-only and boys-only stuff, we'll make those into separate categories.

holy **** you’re going to have a hell of a day when it comes time to move out of your dorm for the summer

^Yes, I know that! However, several of the things on the list are very small and take up little space, but yet are essential things and I know I’ll forget them when August comes and crazy packing time comes, so I have to write them down.

BillyMc’s (Almost) Complete List

Clothes
Bags
Computer
Phone
School Supplies
Hygiene/health stuff
Some books

^Ok, I see you’re going for just a category list, and will figure out specifics later.

I realize mine is ridiculously long, but it is very specific too.

Yeah, I can’t get that specific.

There’s also this, stickied at the top of the forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/82285-z-what-bring-college.html</a></p>

I realise how satisfying it is to make a checklist, though. The longer, the better. You can check yeah, that thread ^ to see if you’ve missed anything or want to add more stuff. And you might as well bring a vacuum (or hand-vacuum) too. Getting charged at the end of the year for not being able to pick up all the crumbs and dirt off your floor = not cool, especially when you find out no one you know has a vacuum either

^Oh true, I guess there are probably several threads like this from past years.

Xbox 360

Clothes

Condoms I’ll never get to use

Laptop

Like a boss

I never really did consider bringing condoms… that says something about me, lol.

I would just follow and edit the list that’s already tagged on the first page of this forum. It’s stuck there for a reason.

That it’s against your religion, that you don’t want to have sex, that you’re aware of the presence of convenience stores near campus?

Or just eyeball it while packing.

I am bringing condoms. Lots and lots.

The Gracken

Most dorms provide a waste can.

Some colleges do not allow extension cords - you can only use heavy duty power strips.

Some colleges do not allow anything to hang from the back of the exit door of the dorm room, for fire code reasons.

Some colleges limit the amount of wall area that can be covered by paper, photos or other flammable materials, for fire code reasons.

I recommend bringing a folding chair.

Be sure to coordinate with your roommate, so you don’t end up with 2 microwaves, etc.

A very tall shelving unit is good (that you assemble on-site), is good if it fits the layout of the room and the ceiling height.

Don’t plan to loft your bed unless you find out that the college allows it. Some beds are not designed for it.

Think about a laptop cooling pad. You can get them for $25. They are supposed to avoid excessive heat on your legs when you are using a laptop for long periods of time. They also elevate a laptop when it is sitting on a flat surface, so that the heat can escape. Heat kills electronics. One (Xpad??) without fans was rated as effective as the models with fans.

oh no. not even thinking about college.'

yet.

4 month 2 go !

@charlie- hadn’t thought about that, I’ll think about it, I might want that, thanks!

Read your college’s housing rules closely. Some are strict about the types of lights they allow (halogen??), because of fire hazards.

Some colleges have vacuum cleaners that you can borrow, so you may not need to bring one.

As far as camera manuals, etc, often you can find them online on the manufacturer’s website.

I think is valuable to bring a good hooded waterproof coat with a removable liner that you can use in various seasons. There is so much walking in college, that it is important to be ready for rain if you are far from your dorm.

I’d add a folding chair and an extra printer toner cartridge.

A sleeping bag may be helpful if a friend comes to visit, or if you have to sleep somewhere else while you are “sex-iled” by your roommate.
