don’t forget condoms, birth control, and toys.

hehe

don’t forget condoms, birth control, and toys.

hehe

laptop heat also kills other things… but you won’t ever have to worry about that, iluvpiano. : )

You probably don’t need your passport. I generally try not to bring stuff like that to school; your driver’s license is enough identification.

^Yeah, I don’t even have a passport yet. My mom thought I should get one over the summer and have it ready, even though I probably won’t use it until sophomore year for a May Term travel course and junior year for study abroad, but she thought I should get it. Dad said no, so I don’t have it and therefore am not brining it!

Okay; that makes sense! BTW, this is an example of a surge protector.

[HP Surge Protector 200](http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=5384)

Thanks, though I asked my dad and he gave one to me to use!

I’m quite confident in saying that you’re probably not going to use half of what’s on that list. Christmas lights? Index card holder? Bookends? Fridge magnets? 4 different kinds of tape?

Calm down. It’s college.

OK maybe not everything…I actually have crossed off a few things but just haven’t updated that here, since no one seemed to want to help add to a general list, I gave up on it and have my own list here printed off at home.

Index card holder- yeah I will use it.

Bookends I crossed off.

Fridge magnets- I don’t like a plain, boring fridge.

Tape- we’ll see.

Xmas lights- thought about decorating my dorm a little bit for Christmas, maybe…

Along the lines of a passport, I would include a secure list of all your vitals, like social security number (maybe even the card), health insurance number, allergies, list of past address (jobs), and if you are like me and end up filing out a lot of your own paperwork, maybe even some tax information. Of course, these items need protection, but it may save one some trouble when applying for jobs or in an emergency. In addition, consider two forms of identification as well for the future job search as well!

Ok, thanks for the advice^!

Good *ing Jesus. I can guarantee you that you won’t need/use a lot of the stuff on this list and that’s coming from someone who also massively overpacked for college. If you’re planning on having a place to cook, which you obviously are since you included cookie sheets of all things, there will definitely be a microwave around. Fridge too, but I will admit that having a mini fridge in your room is very useful. Don’t take food with you… Also, the bathrooms will have hand soap in them. And you will not need a doorstop.
You seem to regard college as a very desolate place, which I can assure you, it’s not. If there are kitchens in dorms, there will be utensils/cooking stuff left over from other people. If you find that you NEED something, you will be able to find someone you know who has it. And there are going to be tons of opportunities to go home and get what you need, have your parents send you something you need or go out and buy something you need. Honestly, it’s better to underpack, since then you won’t have all this extra * laying around that you probably won’t have room for. Also… you will have a roommate. And all that MLA stuff can be found online. I’m just saying, you should really reevaluate this list.

Are you going to college far away from home?

I can’t remember if I saw this on your list, but you should bring a bulletin board w/ pics from home and room for new ones :)

Some extra things I think I will probably need to focus on:

-screwdriver
-a backpack or messenger bag
-shaving gear
-extra pencils and erasers
-swim gear
-some kinds of mini notebooks or extra planners for writing doing to-do lists
-flashlight
-ruler, tape measure
-band-aids
-multivitamins and medicines
-scissors, shears for trimming bangs and such
-stapler
-pencil sharpener or extra lead
-air freshener
-duster
-new alarm clock

That’s all the random things coming into my head right now
Of course, also clothes, textbooks, blankets, and other hygienic/shower stuff, Hats and gloves and winter boots too
Room decorations and entertainment
And probably many more things

Oh my god how much **** are you guys going to bring? No wonder people complain about costs of college. All my worldly belongings fit into one bin. I am taking this:
*Laptop, a few notebooks, backpack, writing utensils, textbooks
*Laundry hamper and waste basket
*Condoms/Beer Money/Rock Hammer/Acoustic Guitar

You have air freshener and Febreze; four different kinds of tape; five different kinds of soap; cookie sheet, ?; doorstop…why?; timer for music…?; erasers listed twice; shoes also listed under piano; two types of music dictionaries (you only need one); too many blankets; under-the-bed storage bins (make sure you know what kind of bed you are going to have, some beds have built in drawers); big study pillow thing? I don’t even know what that is; webcam? Most/all laptops today come with a stock webcam; bed food tray is unnecessary, you really don’t want to eat in bed; Mac remote control; you won’t have too much time to read novels if you are actually going to be a Music Performance/History double major; humidifier; three (or four?) types of soap; digital thermometer—check weatherunderground.com, or the*ingweather.com if you want a funnier source; waste baskets and trash bags are commonly provided by the college; curtains usually cannot be removed; why do you need a drying rack…?; the lighting in most dorms is fine, so you probably don’t need to bring a lamp; just use the sink and a bit of detergent for hand wash only; lunch bag and ice pack—are you not going to be on a meal plan?; door hooks to hang clothes on and over-the-door drying towel rack—you probably won’t have room for both, doors are only so big; if you have a nightstand, a bedside caddy is unnecessary; bar soap and body wash…why?; bring one or two mascara/eyeliner/eyebrow pencils and buy them as needed; acne cleansers, facial cleansers, rubbing alcohol, and concealer? is your acne that bad?; just buy one enormous pack of Q-tips, you save money and space; hairstyling products, hairspray, and hair detangler…kay; inhaler for stuffy nose and breathe-right nose strips…again, why?; water bottle for hair: completely unnecessary, just use the sink and splash a tiny bit of water if you really need to (which you don’t); just like the other cosmetics, bring one or two toothbrushes and buy as necessary once you are there; you only need one ethernet cable; most colleges have printers that print for roughly $.10 per page, so you would actually be losing a ton of money if you ever needed replace the ink (and losing money by buying it in the first place); resume: save it to your computer, DONE; use reference.com for dictionary/thesaurus needs, and don’t being both an MLA documentation guide and an MLA handbook because MLA guides can be found online; external harddrive and flash drive…? no; there is absolutely no reason to bring any AP/SAT II review books nor high school notes, this is college; you will receive a course catalog and a map of the campus at orientation; don’t have an exact course planning sheet because you probably won’t even know exactly what you want to take after your first semester experience; microwaves are often in common rooms, so I would check on that before bringing one; can opener: I brought one and didn’t use it even once; stain remover and instant stain remover? you should pick one or the other; hand sanitizer in addition to three types of soap?; wallet-size graduation pictures: USELESS; Lysol wipes, dust wipes, a cleaning sponge and other cleaning supplies is simply too much; locker magnets to use on fridge in addition to fridge magnets…?; you do NOT need a tool kit; public transportation info can be acquired upon arrival; important campus phone numbers will be provided in your orientation packet; luggage tags can be found at the airport for free, do not buy a new one because it would be a waste of money; instruction manuals for laptop and camera? you should probably know how to use them by now, and if you don’t you can always google it.

Cut down your list or you will be sorry on move-in and move-out day. You should also take into consideration that you have a roommate and your personal belongings may very well interfere with their’s. You should not be moving (what appears to be) most of your belongings.

^ haha way to ****ing break down her list. Who the hell uses all that stuff? Less is more. When you die you don’t take your possessions to the grave with you. I bet she is one of those people that packs 7 suitcases for a 1 week vacation and requires a crew of porters to lug it around with her. I could live out of one suitcase for a year. I already have done it for 2 months.

You will be a much happier person if you discard half of that stuff.

Like most other people I’m going to tell you that you have too much… But I definitely advocate bringing a tool box with basics (hammer, flat/phillips screw drivers, pliers… etc) because few other people will. Tools are always handy and they shouldn’t take up much space.

I don’t want to use leftover kitchen/cooking stuff that other people used…it’s kinda gross. I’ll have my own stuff for what I need. Not going home til Thanksgiving, so no, not lots of opportunities to go home and get stuff.

Yes, 500 miles from home, so the first time I’ll be home will be Thanksgiving, then Christmas, Spring Break, no random weekends in-between.

Yeah I’m probably going to be a bit overpacked, but there’s more stuff you need than what’s on your list^!

quote
[/quote]
Yeah I know what I’ll have. I’ve visited my college 3 times before going…wow you guys think I don’t know anything!!!

No, not for the daily temp…the digital therm is for when you’re sick and want to check your temp!

duh…to dry clothes when you wash them. One of those foldable ones that you only bring out when you need it and it folds up into something small to store under the bed or whatever.

No it’s not and my roommate and I agreed we want one.

ew, gross.

Yeah I will be but you might need to take lunch sometime if people meet somewhere else, who knows…

Ok here you actually have one valid point!

I don’t get my mascara, etc. at Target or something, I get that from Mary Kay, which means I have to order it.

No not really, but you need different things for that…

If I don’t bring that, I can’t sleep when I’m sick. It’s just an inhaler you get at Target for that, no big deal, but very helpful when sick.

I need a printer for convenience; mom said if I’m finishing and printing a paper at midnight or sometime late like that in my dorm, I’m not allowed to walk across campus alone at night to print it because that’s not safe. But I will use the free printing my college has when I happen to be in the library; my printer is just for when it’s more convenient.

don’t know why you have a ? by this one…kinda necessary

Again, like the cooking stuff, I don’t like sharing that with everyone because some people make a mess of it. I had my own microwave along for a week each summer in a dorm for piano camp…and I will for college too. My roommate agreed with me.

Uh yeah you need that…unless you want your dorm to look like a big mess…

My dad said I do need it.

I like to have things ahead of time.

Already got some personalized ones in a luggage gift with duffel bag, etc. from aunt and uncle for graduation.

I do know how, but just in case…

Trust me, there’s a lot more stuff I’m not taking that I’d like to. Some will stay home because I don’t need it; some because it physically can’t fit (my piano! I’d LOVE to take my grand piano, but that won’t work. I’m going to miss it so much!)

@zchryevns- I didn’t comment on all your ideas, but many. I have to assume you’re a male student…I’m a girl and I think we tend to worry and bring more stuff. However, your idea of surviving college is very different from mine.

@gimmescholarship-
Sorry you’re wrong. No I’m not like that.
However, that I could not do!

Ok this is just getting annoying and not what I meant this thread to be for.

Moderators, please close this thread…not sure how we request that exactly, but please do so if you read this because it’s just not what the thread was meant for!

Idk, I’m a girl and tend to agree with what he said. Obviously myself and other posters haven’t made impression on you and that’s fine. To each their own, I guess, but I have actually been in college for a year, as have many others who have replied to this, so our advice is coming from a place of experience. So, either you refuse to listen or you actually do think all of these things are needs, which is simply wrong, I can promise you.
I don’t mean to offend you or anything by saying this stuff, just trying to help.
