Calling All Fall 2011 College Freshmen: Let's start a complete college packing list!!

Okay, here’s another list people can look at that I made on Google Docs. Obviously the Greek stuff none of you will have, at least not right now. But I’m going to be a junior, and I find this a pretty accurate representation of what someone will need.

The bold and italicized stuff is stuff I still need to get.

College Stuff;

People, just let her pack what she wants to pack instead of breaking down every single item she listed! She also stated that most boys don’t need to bring many of the things she listed (makeup, tampons, etc.).
Personally, here’s what I’m bringing:

Laptop (With pdfs of all of my books)
External hard drive
Notebooks / Folders / Paper / Binders
Pencils / pens / extra lead / eraser / highlighters
Clothes - mostly summer clothes, maybe one sweatshirt
Pepto Bismol / Medicines
A bin of food
One plate
One bowl
Fork
Spoon
Dufflebag of Clothes
Microwave (our dorms doesn’t have one already)
Second mini-fridge for alcohol
Alcohol
Bedding
And…condoms.

I left out some stuff like cell phone, and wallet (purse for girls), because those are almost givens, and you definitely won’t forget those at home.

That’s pretty much everything I’ll need, and if I forget anything there’s always a Walgreens on campus. If you personally need more or less, then feel free to add or subtract. You know more than anyone else what you’ll need. She was just trying to give a starting point.

I totally agree. Some people are minimalistic, some are not, and others are somewhere in the middle. It works out in the end.

^Agree with that.

As you can tell, I need my stuff with me. I don’t want to worry that I forgot something. I like to plan EVERYTHING out.

Honestly, you do not need all of that. Take it from someone who is going into their 3rd year in a dorm room.

Basically it boils down to this. Take what you would take on a trip. If you need something some other time, there is such a thing as a store.

If you use a Zippo get a big pack of wicks and flints. You can get like a ten-pack for a few bucks on Amazon.

If your phone requires a USB cable to charge, bring an extra one.

Also your phone probably has an alarm clock on it anyway (at least it’s what I use as an alarm clock), so you might want to forgo that if your phone works for that. And you only need a webcam / voice recorder if your laptop doesn’t have a built in webcam or microphone. Usually both of those work fine. You might want to add workout clothes if you work out frequently and don’t want to dirty up any of your better clothing.

My phone does have that, and I use that to initially wake up, and then my regular alarm clock goes off to actually make me get out of bed. I have a lot of trouble getting up in the morning before 11 am, and when I have to get up at 6, it’s just not good. I set my phone alarm on the highest volume possible, and yet I can still sleep through it very frequently!!! Yeah, the webcam I’m not getting a separate one- my laptop has one I guess. My laptop has a voice recorder too, but I already have a separate one that I use for piano lessons from HS. I added workout clothes to my packing list at home here but haven’t updated this one. Thanks though.

No problem! You could try turning it on ring + vibrate and putting it under your pillow, that works pretty well when just sound doesn’t.

guys, are you really only bringing that much stuff?

-_- every year freshman think they need everything under the sun to come with them, only to find out when they get there, that there is NO room for all of that extra stuff, so it either goes unused or sent home.

OP took a microwave to camp because the ones there were “dirty,” lol.

Do you use your microwave at home? Is that dirty? In all honesty, the microwaves in many dorms are cleaned far more often than your microwave at home. Think about your reasoning and you will realize it is horribly flawed.

We, as returning students, have infinitely more experience than you in packing for college. It is clearly not just a male’s perspective considering a female commented on this thread and said the exact same thing I and many others did.

If your dad thinks you need an entire toolkit, he is mistaken. What things do you have/do that require every tool in a toolkit? The most you will need is a screwdriver and even that is usually superfluous; there was not one situation for which I needed a screwdriver, wrench, hammer etc.

You can take whatever you want, but if you take this much stuff you will have horrible move-in and move-out experiences. Take from our posts what you will, but we are merely trying to give you advice from the perspective of students who have already completed atleast one year of college and have gone through this process and noted what is and is not necessary.

Idk, he said I’ll have use for a screwdriver, tape measure, and pliers and stuff. He went out and bought me one- it’s pink too! Idk how to use most of that or what it’s for, but he said it will be useful…

I barely read half of that and it seems like SO much stuff. I’m going to buy winter boots and a jacket too before I leave but unless you’re going somewhere that’s going to cold as soon as you get there, you don’t need to bring it right away. I’m leaving mine at home until Thanksgiving break.

…maybe it just seems like a lot because of the way you broke it down. Instead of listing all the outfits I’m taking, it’s just under “Clothes” on my list.

Well, with the jacket thing, I don’t know how far north Illinois Wesleyan is, but iluvpiano lives pretty far away from school, like I do. It’s just more convenient to have a coat at school than asking your parents to ship it or whatever.

Yeah, that’s part of why it seems like so much because my list is VERY SPECIFIC! Instead of just saying “clothes, shoes”, I went into detail with it.

Yeah, I don’t want to have to ask my parents to ship everything. Also, whatever I leave here my sister will take and use as she pleases. IWU is in central Illinois, and I live about 500 miles from it.

AAAAAH so much stuff! I will buy some of this on campus I’m sure, and some of it I am shipping to campus.

Too much stuff imo. You don’t need that many clothes to begin with.

Oh I thought I wrote in my original post, the clothing list will be revised. I must have deleted it. Hmm I wonder what I meant as formal flip-flops vs. flip-flops? How much school stuff are you guys all bringing? I think it’d be cheaper to buy at home and bring it with me vs. buy on campus, and I’m worried that if I wait until September to buy at the local Target/Walmart, all the good stuff will be sold out!

Target and Walmart will not be sold out of what you want. Have you ever seen statistics of Walmart’s shipments? I went to Target three days before classes started and found everything I was looking for and more.
