I’m going into my 2nd year. I brought like half of the stuff on the OP’s list and realized I vastly overpacked. Like, when it came time to pack to move out, I was like why the hell do I have so much stuff that I NEVER used? Trust me, I packed things I thought I MIGHT need, and it turns out that you either a) don’t need it ever, b) needed it like once over the whole year, so it wasn’t worth it, or c) someone else had it for that one time you needed it (a very likely option). So if you “might” need it, don’t bring it. You can always buy or borrow it. Legit, my dad almost couldn’t fit all the bins I moved out with into our mini-van! (he also had a hand-truck and my bike in there, but I had moved out a lot of clothes a month before when my parents visited me).

You don’t want to overpack. I always had so much stuff just lying around taking up space, and all those little things? They really add up, don’t let their size fool you. And then you’ve just got all these little things you don’t need crammed into bins and stuff. And again, my list was like half, maybe a little more, of yours. So you’re seriously going to have so much stuff around at all times, and it’s going to become annoying for you.

This year I’m taking half of what I took last year. Also, I’m a girl too. I’m only taking the necessities, I’m taking a lot less clothes (and I’m not a big clothes person to begin with), because if you do laundry once every 2 weeks, you’ll realize you always have so many clothes that you never wear. Even if you do laundry every 3 weeks. And you’ll want to do laundry because you’ll want to wear your favorite shirts again. And I go to school 5 hours away from my house, so I too can’t come home before Thanksgiving.

My dad also packed me a tool kit. I never opened it. I’m sure I’ll have to bring it again though, since he’ll insist I need it. Also, you don’t need all that stuff to clean your room. It won’t be disgusting if you don’t have lysol wipes and such. It will be just fine, rooms are small. Just vacuum the floor and once a week or two, and get a hand-held dirt devil vacuum to get any areas that are collecting dust. I only brought a floor vacuum, but lo-and-behold my friend down the hall had a dirt devil that I just borrowed.

zchryevns–Really? Because last year when I went to Target a few days before school began, most of the stuff I normally bought was completely gone. They still had items–but not what I needed. I think I’ll just buy early and play it safe

Bornin92–thanks for the post! At Stanford, you don’t need a vacuum because they have some at the dorms, but I do want to buy a few cleaning wipes. When you said you brought half of the stuff on the OP’s list, do you mean in reference to bedding/dorm stuff/what? The clothing/school supplies list will be revised as needed. Thanks for advice!

Example: Hammer, what could you possibly do with one that isn’t prohibited or would count as something maintenance/reslife could/should take care of? Wrenches? A screwdriver maybe. Besides, you’re probably living with a bunch of other freshman, and someone else will have thought bringing a toolbox was a good idea - borrow.

Check and see if the high schools near your college start at the same time as you do. If the start dates are even a week or so apart, it could make a huge difference in the availability of the items you need.

I would bring some essential web apps. They don’t take up any extra space and they definitely are worth it for college!

Evernote, for notes Rentchimp.com, to find the best place to live
Nike Training, to stay fit
Groupon, for deals!
Living Social, deals again
Wordpress, to blog back to your fam
pandora, for music you love

If you buy bulk condoms make sure they don’t expire soon, it would be a huge waste of money if you bought so many you couldn’t use them before they expire. And make sure they are the right fit

Also, it can make a bad impression on a girl if you have tons of condoms everywhere.

If you have a bulk box of condoms in your room, chances are you use very few of them before they expire. I also don’t understand why people don’t just go to PP and get a hundred or so for free.

^Free, assuming you qualify for free stuff from them (which pretty much every girl in college will, unless you’re on your parents insurance and are okay with them knowing you attend PP)
Also, even if you don’t, condoms there are only like 10 cents each. A much better deal than buying from stores, even in bulk.

That was the point of my post, i.e. if you have a bulk box of condoms lying around you will not be having any sex due to the unattractive nature of said assumption, atleast from the female perspective. I assumed that was implied, but I see I’ll have to start explaining my sarcasm.
