CALLING CC students: anyone take a language 101 class at a community college?

I want to learn arabic, which isn't offered at my school, so I was thinking of taking it down the road at the community college, which my school will pay for.

The thing is, arabic 101 a five credit [ONLINE] course. Based on your community college experience, how was learning a language?

D did this in HS and loved it. Two caveats:

(1) her class was in-person. I think it would be very difficult to learn a language online. Do they have native language tutors on skype? I have heard of that, and think that might be the only way to really learn a language successfully online.
(2) when she went to use her Arabic at another institution, she found a lot of holes in her knowledge.

Have you considered summer intensive programs? Some people find those a very good solution for language learning.

thank you seattle_mom!

I was actually thinking of taking it in the summer as well, but I want to use that time for internships, jobs, etc.

Anyways, I understand what you mean when you say about online classes & in-person. I was only thinking of taking it online because I don’t want to waste gas commuting to the college, and it would be hard when it came to learning to write in arabic if i had to rely on the computer. i’ll see though.
