CalPolySLO for business/finance

My son is interested in pursuing business and finance. He is ultimately interested in Investment Banking probably Trading, etc… Is SLO any good for that?

I specifically toured the business college at open house (am an accounting major) and nosed around all the floors of the building. I really do think it is an impressive program they have there. All of the finance instructors are very accessible and located very close by.

None of the classrooms can hold more than 40 or 50 students (that’s good size for connecting with the instructor and the material). Several times the OCOB student ambassador asserted that class sizes are such that the instructors really do get know the students and notice when the student is absent. He also assured that classes are taught by professors that are industry veterans and not taught by assistants.

There’s one classroom that has a big screen on the wall with the stock markets being displayed in real time. Also, that same room had a very large led sign that scrolled other stocks and financial info in real time.

I have pics but unable to post here I guess.(?)

If you go to the Orfalea School of Business facebook page and scroll down far, you will see the article about the new led scrolling sign and the new flatscreens.

The new thing is that you can now major in accounting and minor in finance (and vice versa). It adds 7 more classes but it’s very do-able in 1 or 2 extra quarters. Plus, industry finds that major/minor combo very desirable.

Thanks for the great information. My son is worried that name recognition of SLO is lacking for big banks on the East Coast. I suspect that is true, but he would have to make his own path to the big IBanks vis San Francisco…

At one of the seminars, there was a panel of alumni who had gone on to industry. During the Q&A period, someone asked about CP’s reputation across the country. The panel members in so many words, acknowledged that East of the Rockies, CPSLO is not really known.

The other side of this is that they did indeed affirm that SF and LA are VERY aware of CPSLO and recruit heavily there.
