For those of you who applied to CALS, how many of you listed a second-choice major? Do they expect us to? And also, if you did list a second-choice major, how long was your essay discussing your interest in that major?

I didn't. Out of curiosity, what are your choice majors?

-WJJ

biological sciences and if I do the second-choice major, biology and society

Do you think a lot of people put down a second-choice major?

I haven't talked to a lot of people about it, but I did contact a professor and he said that it is not necessary and that it will not help or hurt my chances either way. So I guess it is up to you! Both your majors seem similar, it may be tough to really distinguish the two in an essay. Biological science and AEM are the most popular majors in CALS, unless your heart is totally and completely devoted to biological sciences it might increase your chances if you switch your two choices.

Just my 2 cents.

If I do do the 2nd essay, do you know how long it should be?

I got in and didn't do the second essay, but I'm assuming that you'd follow the same guidelines as for your first-choice major essay.

yea I put in a second choice just in case animal science is too full I dont want them to reject me because I didn't put a second choice down. I put down nutrition, food and agriculture as my second choice. I figured I kinda doubled my chances by doing so.

prncssnyansema, was your 2nd essay around 250 words too?

Mine was really short, i.e. one paragraph, because my 2nd choice was so similar to my first. Length depends on how much you need to say.

yea mine was around 250... same as the first essay, just let them know that if ur first choice is filled there are still other things u want to study at Cornell

Ok, thanks for the responses everyone! :)

!! im going biological sciences and biology and society as my second choice also!

While I was writing my second essay for Biology and Society, it was starting to sound more and more appealing until by the time I finished my essay, I kind of wanted to major in Biology and Society as my first choice. :p

that's incredibly strange, me too!
