Hmm, what were your stats, @goodsam ?

@BetterThanBest: Nothing overtly impressive, I’d say.

A few interesting ECs, some research, and an essay which displayed my love for Physics, basically.

Objective Stats: 2200+ SAT1, 2400 SAT IIs. Top 1% academic-wise at a relatively well-known school.

Dear _____,

On behalf of the staff and faculty on the Admissions Committee at the California Institute of Technology, I would like to thank you for the time and effort taken in completing your application. It is with regret that we are unable to offer you a place in our Class of 2018.

Given the number of highly qualified students who apply to Caltech each year and the very few places available in the class, many talented students must unfortunately be turned away. Each application is thoroughly reviewed by members of the faculty and Admissions staff, and the decisions made by the Admissions Committee cannot be revisited.

In light of the outstanding achievements and credentials you presented in your application, we have no doubt you will have tremendous success as you seek a demanding collegiate education. I encourage you to pursue your educational options with the same thoughtfulness with which you considered Caltech.

Do all of the rejection letters look like this? Truth be told, mine was softer than I had expected.

^Same as above.
