CALTECH YESS Summer Program 2009

OK same here, ughhhh, I actually have a copy of the app, so I’m wondering if I should send it in, but I guess I’ll wait. this sucks, watch us not get in :/

I know! It’s really upsetting. They should have sent an email out. and I checked the website last Sunday night, and the apps weren’t back up. They should have given a full week also :(

Yeah, I mean I didn’t check the site for like 2 days, this is so disappointing :frowning: Do you think this will have a negative impact on admissions? Please tell me no :o

@jbrown @big dreamer

yeah, the way they suddenly put the apps up then said the application should be postmarked in a day was probably not the best choice.

they really should’ve sent out e-mail reminders or something

maybe you could e-mail then explaining the situation?

I sent an email on March 3rd I think, and haven’t gotten a response yet :/

Oh well, I hope that they realize that they have all my school records, an essay, and then with the app glitch they won’t hold it against me. I agree, I would have LOVED an email lol

Hi all,

I am an RSI reject (probably because I am a sophomore), and hoping to make it into YESS! I had no problems submitting my application and now I’m really hoping that they received it ok.

I have also applied to NIH and wondering if I am accepted to both which I should choose.

I’m anxiously also waiting for USABO results.

@ SGS2012,

What’s NIH exactly? I definitely recommend YESS unless you can only do NIH this year. Especially as a sophomore, if you’re looking at programs for your junior summer next year.

I went this last year, and am now planning to go to RSI this summer. Not sure how much YESS helps, but it was a great experience and a lot of fun. And free. That’s good.

@Palaoa
National Institute of Health. It is biomedical research for the summer and it pays :-). It’s not so much a “program”, it’s just a research opportunity. Internships are available from age 16 through doctorate program, so not limited to just this year.

I think you’ll love RSI!

I can’t wait for the results to come out!! But I doubt I’ll get in because I’m Asian. What kind of PSAT and GPA do you guys have? My scores weren’t that great :(

For NIH (I know I missed deadline, but I’m curious), did you have to apply somewhere where you lived or do they provide housing?

@ SGS2012

NIH sounds really cool, and if you’ve had experience with the program, that may be the right way to go. I see going to any program as having one of two motivations: 1) Going because it looks good for college apps and 2) going because you want to learn / have the experience.

Obviously there is some overlap between these two, but you can only do YESS this summer or next year. There’s also a lot of programs that pop up for the summer after your junior year. If you have the opportunity to attend YESS, I’d say go for it. As always though, it’s just up to you, and you’ll be fine no matter where you go!

@big dreamer
They do not provide housing. My aunt is willing to “move” to Bethesda for the summer as she has been a patient at NIH before. Otherwise, NIH will help you find housing, but really, you are on your own. They do pay quite well though to aid in housing.

@Palaoa
Thanks for the feedback. Of course I have to be accepted first before worrying about “which one” :-). I found so many programs I can do NEXT summer, but I am hoping that I will get into RSI next year. I’m really going to spend my time focusing on doing independent research. I have so many ideas, but I’m just not sure who to contact to get started.

Yeah, that’s what I thought, but thanks for clarifying. to closest NIH facility is like 4 hours from my house, so I’d doubt that my parents would let me do that lol. I didn’t apply to other programs simply because of cost, just hoping I get into YESS. Like any programs that costed $$$, I can’t go to, but tehcnically I don’t qualify for aid.

This is a big bump :-). Are application acknowledgements due out this week or next week? And then 2 more weeks for decisions?

^Nice name.
=)

They’re supposed to e-mail the confirmation on Monday the 29th… so next week.

Has anyone heard anything yet?

^
No. I checked my e-mail a few minutes ago, but there was nothing from yess.

Nope, nothing yet.

I feel like I’m waiting for an acceptance, not just a confirmation that I sent everything as I should have :-). Either way, it’ll be good just to hear from them now.

One hour to go 'til the end of the business day. I still haven’t heard anything, have you?
