Can A teacher lower your grade if you come late to class often?

I always miss the bus and I get a ride to go to class from my brother who also misses the bus. I have gym 1st period and I always do what I am supposed to do, run, dress up, everything. But this teacher gave me C because I come late frequently but only for like 5 min and during this 5 min the coach just does attendance. Last quarter he gave me a B- for a really unreasonable reason and my counselor litterly told me why are you getting a B- in gym and told me to bring my grade up. What do I do? I know I have to talk to the teacher, but trust me, this teacher doesn’t want to hear excuses, what would you say and should I go to the counsoler too?

In my school, punctuality and attendance matters in some classes. In others, it doesn’t. You have to ask the teacher.

Ummmm, get to school on time. You really have no recourse; you are the one in the wrong.

Why do you always miss the bus?

I wouldn’t want to hear the excuse either if I was the teacher. Get to the bus on time.

Irrelevant. As said above, get to the bus on time.

Maybe your not good at gym- always put 120% effort and leave it all out there. Gym is the equivalent to the Olympics, so prove you are an A-grade runner.

@skieurope‌ I was just curious, lol.

They can’t lower the grade for the sole reason that you are late. But that can cause a teacher to not like you, and if they don’t like you, then they will grade you harder. Which will make your grades go down

How the hell do you miss the bus everyday anwyay??

They can, especially if the habitual lateness is not really excusable (overslept, took too long to get ready).

I suggest sleeping/waking up earlier.

When you’re not in class, you’re missing material-- in this case, physical activity.

Would you be 5 minutes late each day if first period were math or science?

And in class, he’s the TEACHER, not the COACH. This isn’t an optional sport you’re a part of, it’s a class that’s being graded. It’s not about liking or not liking or grading harder, it’s holding every kid to the same standard.

Look at it this way: would you expect a classmate to earn an A if he cut class every day? Came in half way through? Where’s the dividing line between “only a few minutes late” and " this kid does NOT deserve credit"???

@Orioles21 They absolutely can lower your grade.

You need to learn to get to school on time. Many college classes have strict attendance policies, depending on the school. For example, one of my classes last semester, if you were 5 min late for lab, you got a zero on the lab. Many of my classes allow two absences before your grade is lower by 1/3 letter grade for each absence. Three tardies, no matter how much time (if the professor has already taken roll you are late), equal an absence. You can fail a class for not attending.

Try being late every day to a job and see how long you keep it.

How is it that you and your brother miss the bus so consistently? Is it intentional, so your brother will have the use of the car?

My school has a policy that if you have 5 or more unexcused tardies or 3 unexcused absences for one semester, you don’t even receive credit for the class. This is supposed to counter students who skip class or conveniently walk in 5 minutes before class is over.

If you’re missing the bus everyday (how?!) then that already tells you that you keep doing something wrong and you haven’t bothered to fix it.

In my school, if you’re late-- even a minute or two-- you serve an hour of detention.

Your question was “what do I do?” The concensus here seems to be that you should get to school on time. I drop off 3 kids and still manage to get to school on time. That’s because it’s important to me to keep my job… AND to do it WELL.
