I don’t think I’ve noticed this statement in the TOS before, and it might be that I’ve overlooked it, but I am curious if that means the moderators have the ability to read private messages. If they do, is there anyway for us to know that they’ve been read by anyone other than the intended recipient?

Mods can’t and don’t read PMs. Sometimes members will forward offensive or problematic messages they received to a mod, but that’s a different circumstance.
I suppose to go further - are PMs stored in such a way as to be accessible by anyone other than the sender and receiver? If so, what explicitly is the CC policy regarding such communication? That is to say, perhaps, given

Sorry if I am asking questions that have already been answered. I’m just trying to make sure my secret cocktail recipe is secure for future generations.
Private messages are private and are removed from the system when they are deleted. Data backups are kept, of course, and rotated over time. They should be free from prying, but I would entrust, say, the password to my Swiss bank account, to any publicly accessible computer system. And if Homeland Security shows up with the right court orders, they could probably read your stuff.
Now if only I actually had a Swiss bank account…
Makes sense wrt removal of data. And if the Feds decide they want to know what offline chats I am having I’d like to think it means the world is in a <em>really</em> good place, because if that’s the important think…nothing else must be going on
