Can I apply to UC colleges with a D in my junior year?

I currently just finished my junior year and earned a D in the second semester of AP Physics, with a C in first semester. I took Biology as a freshman, and Honors Chemistry as a sophomore with passing grades in both. Am I still eligible to apply to a UC college? This is my only D out of the entire time I have been in high school. I am not allowed to retake the class over summer or online since it is a lab science and an AP. Should I take AP Physics as a senior and get a passing grade? Should I take the Physics SAT Subject exam? Is there anything I can do?

At this point, if you can re-take the course this summer, the D will be on your transcript when you apply. Coupled with the C, it will drag down your GPA significantly. Though you are probably eligible to apply, a sub 3.7 UC GPA could make one or more UCs out of reach.

What are the rest of your stats, UC GPA, SAT/ACT, ECs, etc?

The rest of my grades are all A’s and B’s though I am unsure of my specific UC GPA for both years. For both semesters of my junior year, my weighted UC gpa is around 3.6. My SAT score is a 2100 and I am taking it another time in the fall.

Your D will remain on your transcript and be calculated into your UC GPA until you retake the semester. On the UC application, you can report that you are retaking the class, but it will not help out your UC GPA when apply in the Fall. For all but 3 of the 9 UC’s, the average UC GPA is 4.0+, so getting into anything other than UCM/UCR/UCSC will be difficult. Good Luck

Take a look at SDSU and CSULB too.

Will you be taking Science senior year? Did you take the AP for the class?

Your D will be included in your GPA unless you retake the class. It certainly won’t help to have it there. But as for you will still be eligible. First you only NEED two years of a lab science so as long as both previous years are lab sciences you may be OK. But according to this page you might be able to remediate it by taking Physics Subject test, or if you get a 3, 4, 5 on the AP test. Additionally you might be able to find an online course that would like you retake it this summer.

I found this information here under Laboratory Science:

I know a student who did get into Cal State with a similar situation in Honor Chemistry his junior year.

Yes you can, I got a supplemental questionnaire AKA borderline status from UCLA and UCSD with a 3.04 UC GPA and a 1460 overall SAT. I could not explain myself to UCLA and UCSD because…it’s personal, it makes me mad every time I think about it. No excuses though…

Anyway, the UCs ask for everyone to apply if they wish to attend to one of their campuses, even if you do not qualify. Your chances will be extremely low, but it is worth the crapshoot. I payed nothing and I thought it was worth it - I learned myself so much from the reflection.

Good luck Numbers, do not let anything stop you from what you want in your world!

From my understanding, D’s are not accepted for UC’s. And I also understand that for math and science, whatever you get second semester is basically what you got all year. As in, they mostly look at second semester. I would find a way to retake the class, but who knows, you could get lucky  I got a D my sophomore year in math so I had to retake the entire course to cancel it out in order to be eligible again
