Just a quick question.

What happens if you get a D in an elective class in highschool? do you have to retake it, or you dont have to retake it? how does that work?

Is it an a-g course in Junior or Senior year?

Its AP physics. i got it in my junior year

Physics is an a-g course, so it will be included in your CSU GPA calculation. If you retake, you can replace the D with the repeat grade which will bump up your GPA before summer of Senior year. Will you have the minimum lab science courses (2) without the Physics class to meet the a-g course requirements by end of Senior year?

i took regular physics, bio, and currently taking chem right now.

Ok, so you have met the a-g course requirements. The D will affect your GPA and make you less competitive for some of the CSU’s you have applied unless you retake but since you are a Senior, it looks like it will stay on your transcript.

Maybe i should have said my question differently:P. Im a Junior right now, and i know im gonna get a D this sem. But that probably doesnt matter.

Semester grades do matter, so a D will adversely affect your GPA. I would try anything possible to get that grade up to a C-. If you want to replace the grade, you need to retake the exact class AP Physics. If you think your GPA can withstand a hit, then do not retake, but you will need to still fulfill the science requirement by end of Senior year. Also, depending upon where you plan to apply for college next year, a D on your record will hurt your chances at many schools.

ok:) can i ask you another question? I friend of mine has a brother that got into CSULA with a F and couple Ds in his highschool year. But that was in 2009. Is CSULA tougher to get now? Or is it easier? im crossing my fingers for easier hahaha

  1. You cannot go by accepted results from 7 years ago.
  2. I posted the average GPA for CSULA. If your GPA is at or above the average GPA with the D on your transcript, then you should be OK unless you are applying to an impacted major.
  3. If you meet the CSU science requirement without AP Physics and do want to bump up your GPA, then do not retake.
  4. You may also change your mind by application time next year, so if you want to keep your options open for applying to higher caliber schools, it is in your best interest to retake the class.

In the end, it is all up to you what you want to do about the possible D.

All CSU’s are getting tougher in the admission process since each year the # of applicants continue to increase along with their stats. 7 years ago, I am sure there were not nearly the amount of impacted majors there are today so it behooves you get the best possible grades and test scores.

alright gumbymom, thanks for the help
