I am going to a highly regaurded business school for my undergrad, majoring in Finance. If I decide to open my own practice I think this will really help and I am not 100% sure if I want to go to medical school so this will be a good fall back option. However, I want to give myself some pre-reqs to get into medical school if I think I want to. What would be some good options for a minor that could supplement my business major? Biology, Chemistry, Public Health…? Thanks in advance!
Google pre-med required coursework to get a list of the classes needed to apply to med school.
It may be hard to get the pre-med classes with a business major as the b-school will have its own core curriculum in addition to the coursework needed for your major and any general education requirements needed to graduate.
For med school admission, no need to do minor or double major (you impress no one except killing your GPA). Just make sure you complete the pre-med required science courses (Bio, Chem, Phy, Math) with good grades (3.7+ GPA), in addition to your Finance major. If your science background is not strong, it will be extremely hard to get A’s since most of those pre-med classes are known as weeder class (ie, pre-med killer).
You should start to try out with one bio and one chem classes see if you are medical school worthy, ie if you get As in both classes. As above poster indicated, if you are not strong in science, you will find out sooner than later. Premed is an intention, not a major, but the med school prerequisites should be looked at not a backup to Finance, if you want to be a physician. You should have a conviction in medicine and think Finance as a backup, otherwise, you will not be successful in an interview, even you have the grade to apply for med school.
Decide to open your own practice? The number of physician owned practices has been steadily decreasing for years and they are in the minority (i think only 1/3 physicians). God only knows how low it will be by the time you’re done with residency in 11 years.
So if you are considering med school, you don’t need to worry about a minor yet. Concentrate on getting in your prerequisite classes for the application and in order to sit for the MCAT. Freshman year, most will take Intro Bio (full year), and Inorganic Chem (full year), and some type of Math. Sophomore year: Organic Chem (full year) and Physics. (full year).
