I was planning to do a TAG with UCSD and transfer into the Bioengineering: Biotechnology major this winter, but it seems that the major is now impacted, and from what I can tell they want you to have all your community college courses done by the end of summer quarter.

At this point I have a programming class, Linear Algebra, and one Bio class to complete before I've finished all the courses recommended by Assist.org. Unfortunately however, I can only take the coding class during summer quarter. My GPA is about 3.65, so I imagine that I'm a reasonably solid candidate, but I'm worried that the lack of those last two courses will make things difficult. They would be finished before I transferred, just in the fall quarter rather than summer.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to do a TAG under these circumstances? Will the fact that the major is impacted cause serious problems? San Diego is by far my number one choice, but if it isn't possible I need to know so I can adjust my plans to fit other schools.

I just wanted to give this a bump in case anyone else had anything to say. I am aware that they don’t like you to take the classes in fall, and that it certainly doesn’t help you when the major is impacted, but I would really like some evidence that points towards either the tag definitely being rejected, or a reasonably strong possibility of it being accepted.

I suppose that is what I am getting at. What exactly constitutes TAG requirements as opposed to perquisites? If what you mean by TAG requirements is just that I have completed 90 quarter units, am a resident of California, and in good academic standing, then I am fine as far as the TAG goes, but I still don’t know if I will get into my major as a result.

I imagine that you mean my lower division major requirements when you refer to prerequisites, which is where things get a little dicey. If taking care of prerequisites through fall isn’t a problem, and I know they will admit me to the major if my TAG is accepted then I am fine. What I am worried about is that the “further review” required for admission to an impacted major could complicate things. I don’t know if they will reject my TAG after further review, accept my TAG but reject my admission to the major, or what. I suppose the worst case scenario would be that they grant me the TAG, I think this means that I got into the major, then I get down there just to find out that I have been accepted to UCSD but not the major. In which case I would need to drop everything, head back up to CC and start prepping for application to a different school in fall 2010. It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but I would really like to make sure that I know how this process works and what my chances are before making a decision.

when they tell you that you’ve been admitted, they tell you what major you were admitted into. tag does not include pre-reqs. tag doesn’t guarantee you the major, especially if it’s impacted; it just guarantees you get into the school. I think you will be allowed to finish your 2 major pre-req courses during fall 09. i think you should call ucsd just to be sure.
