Can I finish my minor after graduation?

I'm an elementary education major, and I'm planning to minor in history. Due to some extenuating circumstances, the minor will be very awkward to complete. I have two options:

Take an online class while student teaching (which I don't want to do. I want to be focused while student teaching).

Take my final class for my minor that next summer.

Since I'm an elementary education major, it would be in my best interest to graduate in the Spring (so I have my credentials). Do you think I could file some permission form or something through my university?

I doubt the university would grant permission to finish a minor after you have graduated. You could take the class over the summer and graduate after the summer term, or you can graduate without the minor.

Do you need the minor for any particular reason? If you really want it, I would recommend taking the online class before you would like to graduate. If you don’t need it, I would just graduate without it.

You never know until you ask, but I doubt they would allow this. Your school may rush the awarding of your degree if you need it for employment or other purposes, but they will likely only do this after you have officially graduated (not while you’re still taking classes to finish your degree).

Just a clarification:

The minor is not related to the major.

The major (actually an area-which can stand without a minor) will be complete before graduation. I could graduate without it.

The diploma will not have the major or minor listed.

Just take the online class while you student teach. I know a lot of people that do this and it’s fine.

As romani suggests, taking the online class is the best choice here.

I work full-time and take two online classes usually, sometimes more and sometimes with a second part-time job. It can be done, you just have to manage your time wisely and make sure that when you are student-teaching that you are not somewhere else in your mind.

I just found out that we’re not ALLOWED to take a class with student teaching.

Well, if you really feel like you need/want the minor, you can take the class in the summer. If not, then don’t and graduate in the spring.

They might give you a waiver for special circumstances.
