Can I get accepted into any UC or CSU?

Hello everyone!

I am from Sacramento,California and I want to attend UC Davis in particular and I am a senior. It is the university that I am most excited to attend. I have a cumulative GPA of 2.6 and my highest score on the SAT was 1130. I know that my grades and test scores are extremely low, however, I have gone through excruciating life circumstances throughout my high school years. Yes, I know that the minimum GPA for UC's is a 3.0, but I want to challenge that requirement. I come from a Low-Income family that makes an approximate amount of 16,693$. My mother works two jobs to support our family of 5(including me). My father on the contrary, is an immigrant who has diabetes type 2 and has been in the hospital due to many unexpected outcomes. He used to be an alcoholic. I am the oldest in my family and have a 15 year old brother and a 9 year old sister.

I am not laying down my whole life story, I am just simply describing where I come from. I am an Mexican-American 17 year old senior. I want to become a physician because I like science and have the compassion to help others in the need of medical assistance. My grades were never good because of unforeseen events. I didn't try as hard in school because of the need of motivation. I have never tooken AP/Honor classes because I was not allowed to because I was in a small learning community, which you either choose that or decide to take all AP courses. Anyways, I wanted to take AP, but decided to stay in my SLC.

I have changed my ways of how I treated school during the middle of my 1st semester in my junior year. I know what it takes to become a physician, I know the rigorous studying med students do, how they live, their schedule and so on. I know what I am getting into.

I have taken leadership and know what is expected from me. I played two years of Varsity Soccer and recently got an award for Academic Athlete. I am in clubs and I am the president of one of many. I volunteer to do extracurriculars outside of school and after school. I am improving in school and upon myself to get to where I want to be at. I am also the first in my family to graduate from high school and go to college and presue a degree beyond a bachelor's degree. I want to major in nuerobiology. I have really improved with the knowledge I have upon me and I eager to attend college.

I am planning on taking 3 SAT Subjects tests and the ACT in December for the first time. I trying to show colleges that I have what it takes to be at UC's and CSU's. Hopefully, somebody can give a little bit of hope. Thank you for reading.

I am sorry to hear about your struggles and glad you have been able to turn things around however, you need a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply to the UC’s. Even with that minimum, you would only have chance at UC Merced. UC Davis Average UC GPA was 4.05 last year with an SAT of 1952. Your best bet would go to a CC for 2 years, get good grades and apply through TAG to UC Davis. With TAG, if you meet the requirements, you are guaranteed admission and with a CC you get to wipe the slate clean and start all over.
If this is not a viable plan, you probably could get into some non-impacted Cal States such as Channel Islands, East Bay, San Marcos and Monterey, but again no guarantee. Since you live in Sacramento, Sac State would be your in-service area Cal State where you are given priority.
Good luck to you.
