Kudos to you for making your best effort to improve your grades. Keep up the good work! With your GPA, you want to score well on the SAT. Because you’re a Junior, you have time to study for the ACT and take that test as well to compare your stats between the two exams. Continue to keep those grades as high as possible.

The California budget crisis and its projected financial impact on the UC and CSU system is worrisome and its full impact is uncertain. The Cal State Schools that were established primarily to accomodate acceptance/enrollment of “B”- “C+” students, is facing the worse financial crisis the system has had to deal with in a number of years. It is impossible to predict just how many students will be denied acceptance to these institutions in the upcoming years. The Orange County register recently had an article that stated that Cal State Fullerton (a lower tier CS) was expecting to enroll more OOS than in recent years, and that the average OOS GPA would need to be around 3.75. In-state students, especially those who live in OC and were applying to CS Fullerton as a “safety School” were warned (in the article) not to apply to CSF as a “safety school” this year.

With the California budget woes in mind, plan to keep your grades up and score well on your test. Consider taking some classes over in summer School (particularly those courses wherein you received a “D” grade). Create a student profile on ■■■■■■■■■■ (the site and its resources are FREE). Insert your grades, Ec’s, Community Service, Test scores and Awards. The site has a “What are my chances” meter, which can assist you in giving you a percentage rating of how well a candidate you are for possible acceptance to your schools of choice. The “What are my chances” meter, compares the stats of all students that have applied to that particular school(s) with that of your statistics. It is a great resource to use to continue to track your academic progression which will give you a glimpse of which schools you may qualify to attend.

Absolutely, I have about the same story as you, except with different classes. My GPA is a 2.7, and my SAT is 1500. I would look at Sonoma State University, Humboldt State University, Stanislaus State University, if you want to get into a CSU. You might even be in reach for UC Merced, if you are a CA student. You should message me, we’re in a similar position and I’d like to hear more about your story. If you’re looking for out of state I highly recommend Marlboro College, VT and Prescott College in AZ.
