Can I get into a college with 2.3 GPA??...help please...?

Okay thanks you in advanced people! I am really stressing out here. I am seeing people with 3.7 GPAs stressing over colleges, really making me feel really apprehensive about my chances.

I am currently a high school sophomore. I would like to get into the University of Maryland or Howard University. Realistically however, my lesser goal is Towson University which I am afraid I can't make it in either.

So far my Grades Transcript looks really bad,

Freshmen Year (C B C F C C B A A D)

Sophomore Year (B C B C)

My GPA is a 2.3214. (2.3). I am ranked 64% in my class.

My counselor told me that it is a long shot of me raising it up to a 3.0 by the end of HS. I am going to take Summer School to retake some classes as well as do better next time and I always take all Honors and AP classes.

My ECs include "The Invisible Children" club which is African aid, fundraising type stuff, and "Necktie Club" which is school activity community type stuff.

I got some volunteer hours by participating in a Frederick Mayoral Election campaign.

I participated in the 2009 UNESCO Model UN summer camp.

Did not take the SAT or ACT yet but I expect I will score mediocre.

As a child (elementary school- early middle school), I entered many writing competitions and recieved honorable mentions, I recieved an honorable mention for the Science Fair in 6th grade and participated in the YES program (science and engineering) but I am assuming that is too early.

My essay will be very great, many people tell me I am a great writer.

So with these ECs, and my GPA looking to be around mid to high 2-area by the end of HS, what would you say my chances are of getting in:

Howard University

University of Maryland (College Park)

Towson University

I am looking for a 4 year school that is reputable and respected but very easy to get into, about maybe 65%-75% acceptance rate that may take a person like me.

.......and one last thing...Community College is NOT an option........

if i cant get into these, what schools do you think will take me?

thank u

I am also bilangual if that will help on my essay.

And one more thing, my grandfather has been in a coma like state for the past year and that has caused some problems. I don’t want to milk this or anything, but will using that piece of information help my chances?

I would feel really bad for doing that but at this point, I am under too much pressure to not use anything to my advantage with my low academic performance.

;-((

I am ethiopian so I am a minority, so that will help as well, right? I will be second generation college student and my parents are immigrants.

My father went to Howard University, so that is an advantage there.

OK sorry guys I’m done, you can answer my question now :-]

Also I used to live in Haiti as a child, again might add some uniqueness to me?

My goodness. Ethiopian and Haitian. Surely there must be someplace for you. And what so bad about community college?

Around here, there is a scholarship for female African American students who are homeless or who have been so during their high school years. It is a full tuition, R&B, books and fees, to any of our state colleges. I believe there are ten available each year for this region. I would look for something similar near you. The girl I know who received one graduated with a 2.2 gpa (unweighted) and is now a nursing student at a state university and doing fine.

I would leave out the grandpa. Sorry he’s ill but… well, just how much heartache can you have?

If you’re only a sophomore I don’t understand why you can’t get above a 3.0. If you got A’s this term and next year you’d be at nearly a 3.2 by the end of junior year. However, if your gpa stays about the same I honestly don’t see anything that would get you into UMD. Towson seems like a decent match, I don’t know anything about Howard though. Second generation doesn’t mean much really, but having an alumni parent will definitely help you. Try to do the best you can this term and next fall, study for SAT’s and see where you’re at in a year. The good thing is that you’re not even half way done with high school and still ahve time to raise your stats.
Good luck!

Thanks man, that is some good advice, I will shoot for "A"s from now on, hopefully a year from now I’ll be where I want to be with my grades.

Based on a ton of personal experience and witnessing others, I firmly believe that where there is a will, there is a way.

YOU can make it happen. Achieve “As” and join clubs. Write the best f–king essay you’ve ever written. Work your butt off. It’s the only way. Yes I do believe you have a chance - I think you’ll have a higher chance and even a chance at better schools if you take this determination and turn it into hard work.

Also… at this point you might want to consider dropping from SOME high classes for easier As… will also free up some time for ECs. But don’t drop all high honors/AP classes.

Hopefully, with some luck, you will be successful. YOU can make it happen.

ends motivational speech

Yes, I CAN make it happen!!

Crowd Applause

Keep trying and I think you might have a chance.

your gpa is definitely kind of low compared to the overachievers on cc. but keep in mind, the people on cc with 3.7s and 4.0s do not, DO NOT, represent the population. keep trying! try to ace the sat and you should get into a decent university!

UMD would be next to impossible but Towson is possible, you should look at West Virginia University.

There are a ton of colleges that will accept you, just none of the highly competitive ones. Frankly, that matters so incredibly little (unless you have set unreasonably standards for yourself that you feel can only be reached through the vapid credentialism that comes with a top 15 school.)

Take a look at schools in Pennsylvania -

King’s College
Wilkes University
DeSales University
etc.

All offer a great education through a more intimate setting, and if you excel and don’t care for it there you can always transfer out. Though honestly, smaller unheard of liberal arts colleges provide some of the most unique experiences, that most kids would never imagine having. Good luck!

P.S. It will also help to schedule an interview and really finesse them with some personality and display a strong desire to learn. A good essay is also a big plus.

First, you really can’t say you can produce a great essay because it’s much harder to do than it sounds. Second, don’t worry. I finished Sophomore year with a 2.X accumulative GPA as well, but over the summer, I realized how badly screwed I am for college, because I always envisioned myself in some top colleges, so this year, my Junior year, I’ve been pretty much getting straight As and pulled my GPA 3+. You can do the same. As for the schools, I’m not sure of your chances.

West Virginia University looks interesting to me, thanks Soccer102592.

What kind of grades are you capable of getting?

I ask because your GPA is low. Is it the best you can do? It might be, not everyone can get As.

If you go to college you need to really put some effort and thought into finding a college environment that will help you succeed. I suspect a big university is not the right setting for you.

Actually you could simply get into a community college for the first year and then transfer to a university. You would have to improve your GPA of course but try some tutoring and apply yourself. BTW if you try this approach you should type a resume of what you have done to improve yourself before you transfer and why you deserve this.
