Im currently taking 10 credits and am feeling much more confident about my grades. I think ill be able to get As and Bs.

I have been paying for all of my classes out of pocket working full time while I go to school. Luckily I have a place to stay for now that I can afford to pay for my credits but I may not have much longer.

I just want to know, is there any way I could get into a California State University or am i wasting my time? I’m looking at schools like Humboldt State University, Sonoma State University and Stanislaus University as having the highest acceptance rates.

Is there any chance i could get into a school like that if i do well this semester as well as next semester?

If there is any chance in the world i want to go for it as it has always been a dream to graduate from a university. I understand that my mistakes will prevent me from ever going to a prestigious university but i want I don’t want to give up on my dream. Please be honest with me. I am determined and i feel like im ready to put in the work required and do what it takes to transfer if it is at all possible.

My dream is to graduate from a university. Is there any way i can turn this around?

https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Pages/upper-division-transfer.aspx says that you need at least a 2.00 college GPA to be admissible to a CSU (higher if you are not a California resident). You also need at least 60 semester (90 quarter) credits as well as the “golden four” general requirements (listed on the previously linked page), plus prerequisites for your major (see https://www.assist.org ).

According to https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Documents/cal-state-apply-transfer-credit-entry-guide.pdf (page 14), if your F grades were at colleges which allow replacement by repeating the course (i.e. if you repeat the course, the original grade does not count), then you may be able to raise your GPA by repeating those courses and doing well in them.

Impacted campuses and majors may have higher GPA thresholds than 2.0. https://www2.calstate.edu/attend/degrees-certificates-credentials/Pages/impacted-degrees.aspx can help you find out which campuses and majors are not impacted and should admit if you have a 2.0 college GPA. CSUB, CSUCI, CSUDH, HSU, SFSU, SSU, and CSUStan are not impacted for upper division transfers, but some majors may be impacted.

This link shows average GPA by CSU campus. Individual major GPA’s will vary and you get priority at your local in-service area CSU.

If you do as well as you expect this semester, then talk with your advisor about academic renewal. I don’t know how policies vary among CCC’s, but here’s one example: http://catalog.sjcc.edu/college-district-policies/academic-renewal/

Based on that example policy… if you do get A’s and B’s this semester, it should be possible for you to satisfy the criterion of averaging a 2.0 or above for the year. In that case you would be able to get 24 credits of F or D grades earned prior to this year wiped from your GPA. This would substantially improve your cumulative GPA, especially if you can plan out which courses to “renew” and which to repeat, and get rid of the majority of your D’s and F’s.

So, look into the academic renewal policy at your CC, speak with your advisor, and do everything you can to keep your grades up this semester!

Also find out which CSU’s are considered “local” to your CC. Local applicants get an automatic GPA bump - for example, SJSU gave local applicants an extra 0.25 this year, I believe. So if there’s a local CSU that also isn’t impacted for your major, that could be a help as well.

What is your major? Are you doing an AA-T program that would give you a transfer guarantee?

Do you know why you’ve had such difficulty in some of your classes? Is it possible that you have some un-diagnosed issue (a learning disability like dyslexia for example)…? Or do you feel like there were other problems getting in your way, which you’ve now solved or learned to work around? Make sure you take advantage of all the resources available to you, to get the help and support you need.

It’s not too late to turn this around, if you’re really able to do something differently going forward, and if you have clear and achievable goals. Good luck!!

Thank you all so much for these replies. It sounds like I need to make sure to follow an AA-T program if I want to be successful in transferring.

It’s not impossible to transfer without an AA-T, but the guaranteed articulation does make it a lot easier. You can search pathways here https://adegreewithaguarantee.com/en-us/Find-Your-Path
