I really want to go to Howard University in D.C. to major in African Studies and minor in Philosophy. What do you guys think my chances of being accepted are?

My admissions letter is really good and it's 6 pages long. I have letters of reccomendation from an English Teacher and a Judge.

Why do you have a 2.3 GPA… the rest of your information would indicate you could do much better… This is a question that adcoms will wonder about so it would be best to address it in your application.

I’ve gone through a lot of things these past few years, such as the death of my father and grandmother, living in a homeless shelter, the remarriage of my mother, and attending 3 different schools. What do you think the chances of me being accepted are though?

Oh wow. Sorry to hear about all of that.
I think if you address all of that in your application, you should be good to go.

Colleges are interested in people who have triumphed in the face of adversity, which it sounds like you have. If you address all of the things you’ve been facing in your application, I bet they would overlook the GPA. Just tell them you’re interested in a chance to really apply your talents and live up to potential.

I hate how, on this site, the only people who get several thorough chance predictions are the ones with amazing transcripts (i.e. 4.0-5.0 GPA’s, awards with big names to things we’ve never heard of, etc.). It really ****es me off sometimes, because it’s so unrealistic. It’s like this site has become a place where rich privileged kids come and have their ego’s stroked.

If you have a 4.1 GPA, and you were president of every club at your High School, and you got a 35 on the ACT… of course you have a chance at Harvard!!! Give me a ****in’ break (please excuse my language).

But when I, a normal 'ole below average student, comes to be chanced, I get like 5 one-sentence replies. You people make my blood boil!!

ummm try these: arizona state, george mason, csu’s, suny’s, some lac’s, and few states
it depends on yur location and where yur willing to go
also i agree with u about smart arrogant ppl getting more attention than avg or not as smart ppl
i notice there threads r always longer than “non-overachievers”

make sure that judge knows u well, like at least 1 year, cuz most colleges dont care about reputation of yur recommenders.
i think u’ll get into howard with those good ec’s

You’ve got a decent shot. As long as you can get yourself across through the essays (maybe get more recomendations from teachers?). You have a pretty good chance to get into Howard or Tuskegee or other top HBC’s for African Studies (especially if you’re not black, cause the minority thing would help you out). Not trying to be racist, just pointing some stuff out.
