bump…

Goddamn, you went through all the menace fate has to offer, yet, you remain involved in lots of activities. Wow. I understand how your GPA has taken a hit from such harsh events…

Tell you what: your best shot is writing a stellar, personable essay. You have lots of substance behind your mind… put them to best use.

I can’t say whether you’ll get into howard or not (know nothin about them), but you have my luck. ;)

LEMON

yes, I’m pretty sure U can get in. Write good essays . ADDRESS your problems in them and Howard will take you. Howard has a very varied class structure so it will understand. Tho- if you can retake the act to do better Do it!

For some reason I feel like you guys are just being nice, and not telling the truth.

bump…

Yeah, if you talk about your situation people should be more sympathetic and you have very good ECs.

Try doing a search on college board with your planned major, location of school etc and look at the selectivity of each school. Your ACT is good. FAMU, a historically black school in Tallahassee, Florida, is not very selective. Collegeboard says that 17% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49. Bethune-Cookman University is also historically-black college with 32% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49. I believe FAMU has a major in African studies.

Have your rec letters address your “life obstacles” too.

And good luck.

But I really want to go to either Howard or Hampton…

Look into Berea College. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the institution, but I’m pretty sure they would take interest in your marganilized life circumstances. I’m really not sure about Howard, although my guess is that they too would take interest. I’m sure you will get into a school you are happy with. Another piece of advice - make sure to interview. You can most easily express your situation through an interview, all while producing “demostrated interest.”

Good luck!

I don’t think Howard has interviews…

You’re right, it doesn’t (according to collegeboard, atleast). I don’t believe they even consider any demonstrated interest, which is very odd. I suppose you could attempt to contact the admissions office, you may be able to explain your life story to your regional admissions officer.

“I’ve gone through a lot of things these past few years, such as the death of my father and grandmother, living in a homeless shelter, the remarriage of my mother, and attending 3 different schools. What do you think the chances of me being accepted are though?”

I was diagnosed with diabetes a little more than a year ago, compared to your experiences that’s probably nothing, but my heart, really goes out to you.

Any who, I personally think you should apply to Howard. To me it seems like a great match. If you can, try to boost your gpa a little bit more. 24% of their incoming class has a gpa of 2.5-2.99.

Good luck to you and your future!
Please chance back!
My thread is called Fordham?! but I’m not sure how to put a link, sorry

bump…

i have no idea about the university however i can say this.
while your gpa is very weak, if you write your college essay explaining with good reasons why it is so weak, and why you can do much better, that will improve your chances significantly

I agree with evryone else. adcoms love triumph in the face of adversity. your act proves that you"re smart. would they wonder how you had time for all those activites, but not enough time devoted to school work? and btw, dont assume that all the good apps are getting all the attention. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736144-chance-upcoming-senior-my-school-picks.html The only person to chance me was jangtastic ( which i appreciate). ive been waiting all night for more responses, while ur on ur third page

Write an essay about your hardships and you’ll be fine. That will make you unique.

You are in

you could get into OK schools like Hofstra. What’s important is if your Junior year is above a 3.0

Your reply on the first page is so true. So many kids on this site are perfect and people on this site just see them, not average kids. You can definitely get accepted to Howard. There are kids with your grades and Act score there.

I’ll be a little bit more specific than I was before. Your act score is decent, 26 composite is in the 85th percentile. You were not specific as to what sort of classes you were taking. If you were in mostly honors and AP’s, with some college preps, then a 2.3 GPA isn’t the end of the world and you can still get into some decent schools. What is important is if you had over a 3.0 your junior year. My friend got into Hofstra with around a 2.3. He had a 1.8 his freshman year and a 3.3 his Junior year. Colleges take into account that men mature later than women, so your freshman year isn’t that important.

Your EC’s are ok, but it would really help if you had a sport. You should definitely join a sport early next year just to show that you are well rounded. I’ll be honest though, Howard doesn’t look at EC’s nearly as much as they do at Standardized tests and academic record. The average high school gpa there is 3.2, so you still have some hope. Also, their act range is 20-28, which puts you around the 65th percentile. You have around a 50% chance I would say.
