I am a rising senior, and I am going to be applying to schools for fall of 2016. I am a Florida resident, and my dream school is FSU.I am not that familiar with the whole college application process, as I will be the first in family to attend a four year university.I want to attend FSU for Media/ communications because I have an interest in television production.I have a 3.79 gpa. I saw that the minimum from last year was 3.8, and I am hoping I can still be accepted. I have taken all honors classes, and will be taking 5 AP courses my senior year.My typical report card has 6 A’s and 1 B. I have taken 3 years of spanish. I will also be in several clubs.I have not yet taken my SATs and ACTs, but I am confident that I will at least meet the minimum. I am Hispanic.I currently have 100 hours of community service completed.I am wondering how and if my senior courses will affect my applications at all. Also, should I not apply because my gpa is too low? Sorry if I seem misinformed, I just haven’t had anyone to talk with me about the whole college application process.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows of any other universities that I should apply to, please tell me!
I’m a newbie here (fellow Floridian) and just wanted to encourage you. My ds graduates in 2016 too!
I would think you have a decent shot at FSU.
From their freshman admissions page:
"The academic profile of the middle 50% of freshmen accepted in 2014 was:
3.8-4.3 academic GPA; 26-30 ACT composite; 1760-1960 SAT total
In addition to the academic profile, a variety of other factors are also considered in the review process. These include the written essay, the rigor and quality of courses and curriculum, grade trends, class rank, strength of senior schedule in academic subjects, math level in the senior year, and number of years in a sequential world language."
Notice that the stats are for the MIDDLE 50%
If my son were in your shoes I’d have him focus this summer/early fall on test prep for the SAT and/or the ACT. My son did the April ACT and then took it again in June. He has not taken SAT, though he did take SAT Math level 2 (subject test). He plans to take more SAT subject test in the fall, and will probably take ACT one more time in September.
My only concern is that you get the best score you can, as early as you can, on your standardized testing. I would do some practice tests, too, to see where my scores trend. I’d also go to a prep class.
Keep your GPA as high as possible as well.
To me you sound competitive for FSU (if you can pull a good SAT or ACT), but again - I’m new here! Don’t take your foot off the gas pedal and you should do fine! Best of luck to you.
Thank you! I’ll be sure to maintain my gpa this year. I’ve been practicing for the SATs and ACTs on my own this summer with workbooks and I am looking to take them at least twice each this fall.I will look into sat prep classes in my area. I appreciate your words of encouragement! I wish your son luck as well in his college application process!
Being a Florida resident with two brothers that went there, it is not a very difficult school to get in for in state. One had a very comparable GPA, with the only real EC being a leadership position in ROTC. We all knew he was going to get in, it wasn’t much of a stretch. Unless you get below a 25 or so on the ACT, count your chances as very likely.
Thanks! That’s good to hear!
