Hello, lovebugs.

I'd consider myself set when it comes to CR and Writing...I can score around the 800 range on both, and I got a 760 on SAT II Literature. However, I can't seem to score above a 650 on the Math section. I know that Rice is very math and science oriented, and I'm wondering if this will make a huge difference.

I'm going to be taking the ACT as well as Math I & II subject tests, so I'll be studying a lot more for those to see if I can make up for my SAT Math score. I'm so scared...I'm applying to Rice ED and I would honestly turn down Ivy league schools for Rice any day. I can't see myself anywhere else.

In case it matters, I'm planning on majoring in psychology (and maybe throwing in a visual arts double major).

Rice uses a holistic admission process. Thus, no one factor determines the outcome of your decision and Rice will look at all of it together - the big picture. The big picture here is that your tests show that you are really strong in CR and not quite as strong, but still strong, in math. You’re not interested in studying science/engineering. I don’t even think you need to take the Math subject tests. You don’t need to prove that Math is your strength if it really isn’t. The admission officers will look past your test scores to your recommendations and essays. And FYI, the entire purpose of the school choice question on the application supplement is to help them put your application in perspective…not because they have certain quotas to fill. You’re going to indicate social sciences on that, and in context your math score seems totally okay…at least to me.

Are you a senior and haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet? Time to get on that :-).

You won’t want to take both Math exams… one or the other is fine. I’ve heard it is more difficult to score well on the 1 than it is the 2 (subject tests).

One score isn’t likely to be a make or break in your application. Do your best, give it a try and see where it goes from there.

it’s definitely possible. i got in last year RD with a 650 M, 800 CR, and 780 W. they even gave me a sizable merit scholarship for writing (i wasn’t published or anything either, just involved in a few writing ECs in high school).

i got a 750/760 (don’t remember which) on the SAT II lit test and a 740 on US history. i agree with the above poster, don’t stress yourself out trying to make it look like you’re good at math if you aren’t. improve your SAT score if you can, but otherwise focus on presenting your strengths. i didn’t even take calc in high school, which in hindsight was a major weakness in my application, and everything ended up fine because i really pushed the humanities angle.

Yeah, I also got in ED with a 650 math. It’s definitely possible; just make sure the rest of your application is solid. Holistic process and whatnot.
